#### **Do you remember the first time you saw each other?**

**Ignasia:** Well, kinda. We went to the same high school in a small town called Quillota, but as Andrés is four years older than me, I just saw him passing by. I remember I thought of him as the popular guy. His skater vibe gave him an aura that was hard to ignore, even for a then 13-year-old me. We were in totally different worlds, but I definitely noticed him. We even played at the same school event once—I sang, he played guitar. I doubt he saw me, though, haha.

**Andrés:** Actually, I did notice her. Nacha always had this energy that made her stand out, even if we never talked back then.

#### **You call Ignasia “Nacha”, why?**

**Andrés:** Nacha's just what everyone calls her; it's a Chilean thing to have nicknames. I'm "Happy" to my friends because I'm always smiling. But whilst Nacha thought of me as a cool skater guy, I’m actually pretty shy. It took years before I dared to make a move on her. Our paths crossed again in Santiago, the capital of Chile, where we both moved after high school. I was getting into professional photography, and Nacha needed photos for her acting portfolio. Our first photo session together was when we started talking and became friends. Even though I was dating someone else at the time, we shared a good vibe.

**Ignasia:** We definitely clicked, even if it was all professional at first. After our third photo session, Andrés invited me to an indie concert.

**Andrés**: That was a good move, ‘cause I was taking pictures at this event and my friends were hosting the party so I could take her backstage. Nacha was clearly impressed, haha.

**Ignasia**: Well, duh. He was working already, I mean, with bands and brands and stuff. It all felt so professional, and I was just a student.

**Andrés**: After the concert we went to a bar, a very shitty one, we drank mojitos and danced to reggaeton.

#### **What happened then?**

**Ignasia**: Well, we didn’t kiss. I tried to, but he gave me a hug instead. Only until the second date we kissed.

**Andrés**: I told you; I’m shy! But when we were dancing on our second date, I knew that I could go for the kiss. We share a love for reggaeton and indie music, I actually think our mutual passion for this music drew us together. But as we started dating, we noticed we had even more in common, like our similar dreams

#### **What were those dreams?**

**Ignasia:** Well, we’re both creative and passionate about making things. Our relationship was pretty strong and I even worked with Andrés for a while at his private studio. During the pandemic we broke up, I think the social restrictions made us feel locked up, so we weren’t our true selves. But after a while we started to see each other again. In the time apart I visited Amsterdam. That trip was transformative, I fell in love with the city's openness and warmth. I knew I had to move there one day. In the meantime, Andrés traveled through Europe. When we started to see each other again, we spoke a lot about our futures. We realized there was more to life than what we were living in Santiago. I told him that I wanted to move to Amsterdam, and he joined me right away. No hesitation whatsoever.

#### **Do you think Chile pushed you out, or Amsterdam dragged you in?**

**Andrés:** Hmm, that’s tough. Growing up, I always wanted to see and do more than what my small town offered. Getting the internet was a game-changer for me. It started with my love for skating, then I got a camera and began sharing my stuff online, on a skate blog. This opened up the whole world to me, right from my screen. At home I always felt a bit different, by the way that I dressed or my interests. I was so curious about what it would be like to live in another place.

**Ignasia:** It’s not like we were unhappy in Chile, I think we both just knew there was so much more out there to experience, to learn. That craving for more—to see more, to be more—kind of glued us together. It wasn’t about running away from anything; it was about chasing all the possibilities that life could offer, together.

#### **And when you got here, was it everything you hoped for?**

**Andrés:** Well, Amsterdam was a big reality check for me. Back in Chile, I was working with top brands and running my own studio. But landing in Amsterdam? I pretty much had to start from scratch. I had sold everything except my camera. It was tough, not gonna lie. But what I really appreciate here is the social vibe, it's different. In Chile, it's all about family, but when it comes to work, everyone's out for themselves. Here, there's a sense of community that's just... it's refreshing.

**Ignasia**: Amsterdam opened my eyes in so many ways, especially about equality. Back home, the gap between the rich and the poor is just massive, and it feels like the rich couldn’t care less about the poor. But here, there's this sense of everyone being in it together. The social system is way more welcoming than in Chile, I really appreciate that about the Netherlands.

#### **How has Bouncespace played a role in your journey in Amsterdam?**

**Andrés:** When we got to Amsterdam, it was a waiting game for me because I didn’t have a work permit yet, I was just living off my savings and not doing much. Nacha jumped into work, starting as a barista, but wasn't feeling it. After 6 months I got the job at Disruptive Records, which was located on the third floor at Bouncespace. I overheard people talking about how they were in need of a new barista. I couldn't help but brag about Nacha being an awesome barista. Next thing you know, she's part of the Bounce crew.

**Ignasia**: Bouncespace is much more than just a place to work. It's where I can truly be myself and feel that my voice is heard. I've shared with the team my ambition to contribute beyond just the café role, and now I'm diving into roles as a social media and event manager, which I absolutely love. But I’m also still really passionate about acting, so: I'm launching an acting workshop right here at Bounce in the next few months.

#### **You’re not giving up on acting?**

**Ignasia**: After hitting a wall with traditional casting methods in the Netherlands, I decided to carve out my own path, combining my passion for acting and social media to create content, with Andrés supporting me as my videographer. Giving up isn't in my playbook. My ultimate aim is to meld my skills in social media and acting.

#### **Living together and working together, how do you manage conflicts?**

**Ignasia:** Andrés is such a calm presence, really. I tend to overthink things, and sometimes, Andrés doesn't offer much verbally, which sends my mind racing. But we're both committed to understanding each other better and are even in therapy to work on communication issues.

**Andrés:** Sí.

#### **Looking ahead, where do you want to be in 5 years?**

**Ignasia:** In five years, I see us running our own creative studio, integrating acting and other creative projects.

**Andrés:** My aim is to elevate my creative pursuits to new heights. Patience is key, but I'm eager to explore every avenue of creativity. Opening our studio here would be ideal, a place where we can both shine. But I actually see Nacha do bigger things, things she doesn’t even know she’s capable of right now. She truly is the star in our relationship.

**Ignasia:** (laughs) Make sure you write that down!

#### **Well, I think we will see more of you two since you also perform together, right?**

**Andrés:** Yes, Nacha sings and I play the guitar. Just like how we started out in high school. It feels surreal. We had our first paid gig together. It's a full-circle moment, from playing in our small town, to now sharing our music here. I'd say it's "la media volá" – it's unbelievable.

#### **So, Florian, I seem to be drinking Stooker Specialty Coffee beans every day! How did your coffee end up at BounceSpace?**

Haha, I’m glad to hear that! My connection with BounceSpace began in 2012 when Onno, my current business partner, and I helped set up Lot 61. During that time, BounceSpace opened, and we established a small espresso bar there where I worked as the barista. We got to know the community and made many connections. After we left to start our own company, Stooker, the connection faded. About a year and a half ago, Jorn from BounceSpace wanted to take their coffee offerings more seriously and needed expertise. We saw an opportunity to return, collaborate, and create something exceptional, transforming the coffee corner into a vibrant, educational space.

#### **You don’t just deliver coffee beans, right? Can you elaborate on Stooker’s concept and what sets it apart?**

At Stooker, we focus on three main components: quality beans, skilled baristas, and top-notch equipment. But it goes beyond that. We offer comprehensive support, from bar setup and workflow optimization to barista training. It's about creating an entire coffee experience, not just serving a drink. We aim to share the story behind the beans, the farmers, and the journey of the coffee itself. Our approach is holistic—we look at everything from the design of the coffee bar to the sustainability of our practices. We believe in creating a seamless experience where every cup of coffee tells a story and every interaction is an opportunity to learn and connect. It's not just about the end product; it's about the entire process and the relationships built along the way.

#### **Why is it important to share the story behind the coffee beans?**

Transparency and sustainability are at the core of what we do. Knowing where your coffee comes from and understanding the effort and care that goes into producing it adds value. It’s crucial to highlight the farmers' stories, their practices, and the sustainability efforts involved. This not only enriches the coffee experience but also promotes paying a fair price to the farmers and better practices in the industry. By educating our customers about the origins of their coffee, we help them appreciate the complexity and beauty of the process. It's about fostering a connection between the consumer and the producer, which we believe leads to more thoughtful consumption and a greater respect for the product. Moreover, it supports farmers and communities, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their hard work.

#### **The specialty coffee industry seems quite niche. How has it evolved over the years?**

Specialty coffee has grown significantly. Initially, it catered to a select group of enthusiasts, but it’s becoming more mainstream. People are willing to go the extra mile for quality and sustainability. This shift reflects a broader trend in consumer behavior, where people seek out products that align with their values and are willing to invest in better quality. When we started, specialty coffee was a small, almost underground movement. Now, it's a significant part of the coffee culture. Consumers are more informed and interested in what they drink. They appreciate the nuances and are curious about the stories behind their coffee. This change has allowed us to reach a wider audience and make a more substantial impact.

#### **There’s often talk of ‘coffee snobbery.’ What’s your perspective on this?**

Coffee snobbery can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it represents a deep appreciation for quality and craftsmanship, which is great. But on the other hand, it can create barriers and intimidate people who are new to specialty coffee. At Stooker, we try to strike a balance. We want to educate and share our passion without alienating anyone. It's about making great coffee accessible and enjoyable for everyone. We believe in celebrating the complexities and nuances of coffee while also being approachable and welcoming. The goal is to enhance the coffee experience, not to make it exclusive or elitist. That’s why we started our academy where we train all the baristas who work with our coffee, both in the hospitality industry and for consumers. We encourage curiosity and learning at every level, whether you're a seasoned coffee enthusiast or just beginning to explore the world of specialty coffee.

#### **I have the feeling that the specialty coffee industry is quite male-dominated. What’s your take on that?**

It's true that historically, the coffee industry, particularly in roles like roasting and ownership, has been male-dominated. However, there are positive changes happening. More initiatives and organizations are promoting diversity and supporting women in coffee. It’s about creating opportunities and breaking down barriers. At Stooker, we strive to foster an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. We see more women entering the field, and it's exciting to witness the shift. Gender diversity brings different perspectives and skills to the table, enriching the industry as a whole. We have collaborated with initiatives that support women in pursuing careers in coffee, such as a training program and a platform for their voices to be heard. We have sourced coffee from cooperatives made up entirely of female farmers and worked with importers in Rwanda who help female farmers acquire land for coffee cultivation. We stand for equality in terms of gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation, and we apply this belief in practice wherever we can. Currently, our team is 25% female and 75% male, and we aim for 50% female representation.

#### **Coffee is often seen as a social beverage. What makes 'having a coffee together' such a central part of social interactions?**

That's an interesting point. Having coffee together has become almost a cultural institution. It's more than just drinking coffee; it's about connection. In many cultures, sharing a cup of coffee is an excuse to gather, talk, and bond. It serves as a social lubricant that brings people together, whether for business meetings, catching up with friends, or even first dates. Coffee shops often serve as communal spaces where people feel comfortable and welcome. This social aspect is ingrained in the very act of "having a coffee," which has evolved into a ritualistic experience. The warmth and comfort of a good cup of coffee can create an atmosphere of relaxation and openness, making it easier for people to connect and communicate.

#### **What’s your vision for the future of Stooker and your role in the coffee industry?**

Our goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in specialty coffee. We want to expand our partnerships and bring our sustainable and quality-focused approach to more places. Personally, I’m passionate about education—helping people understand and appreciate the nuances of coffee. Whether through training or simply sharing stories, it’s about making a positive impact and empowering others. We envision Stooker as a leader in the industry, not just for our products but for our commitment to sustainability and education. We aim to be a source of inspiration and knowledge, driving positive change in how people perceive and consume coffee. Our future involves more collaborations, innovative projects, and continuous improvement in our practices to set new standards in the coffee world.

#### **Sounds like sustainability is important to you, how do you incorporate that into your personal life? Is it something you want others to be inspired by?**

If there’s one thing I’d like to leave with, it’s the importance of being mindful of the choices we make. Whether it’s the coffee we drink or the way we live our lives, every decision has an impact. By choosing quality and sustainability, we can make a positive difference in the world. And of course, always savor your coffee—it’s a small joy that connects us all.

#### **Let’s start at the beginning: what kind of role did music play in your lives growing up?**

**CONNIE**: I started dancing when I was really young—it was my first way of expressing myself. I grew up in a pretty traditional Chinese family, I thought I had to become a doctor. So, I tried that. I studied biology, got a job in that field… and hated it. Quit, moved to LA, and started working behind the scenes at festivals—literally unlocking dressing rooms for artists and fetching Gatorade (only the blue one, of course). Eventually, I found my way into artist management and stayed in that world for ten years. But during the pandemic, I needed a reset. I moved to Amsterdam and started working at FUGA, a music distribution company. That’s where I met Melissa—and we quickly bonded over the same frustrations with the industry. We kept waiting for someone Dutch to start something for women and gender nonconforming people here. And then we thought: *fuck it—let’s do it ourselves.*

**MELISSA**: I’m originally from Scotland, but I kinda lost my accent though—haha. I studied international relations, but music was always in my life. I played piano, drums, and sang growing up. Still, the idea of working in music never really felt like a “real” option until I accidentally landed an internship in Amsterdam. That company happened to share a building with FUGA, and I ended up working there myself. When Connie and I met, we realized we shared the same itch to build a more inclusive community in music. So we started shesaid.so Amsterdam [a local chapter of the global community shesaid.so]—and suddenly all those late-night venting sessions had a real purpose.

#### **What did you notice specifically that made you feel something had to change?**

**MELISSA**: The heart of the scene is still dominated by men. One thing we both noticed was how effortlessly men support each other in this industry. Sharing tips, passing on contacts, opening doors. That support network exists for them, but for women and gender nonconforming people—it’s a lot more fragmented. The community is there, but the structure isn’t.

**CONNIE**: And we wanted to build that structure, especially here in Amsterdam where, as expats, we didn’t see anything that was broad enough and inclusive enough. There are some women-in-dance collectives, which are great, but we felt there was room for a wider umbrella—something that included people across genres, from hip-hop to classical. Amsterdam isn’t just a dance music city, and we wanted to reflect that.

#### **Starting a new community as two expats in a very Dutch scene—was that challenging?**

**CONNIE**: Absolutely. One of our first big projects was a hip-hop mentorship program with Johnnie Walker’s “Pass the Mic” campaign. And in that process, you have two people who didn't grow up here, who don't speak the language and knew very little of the Dutch hiphop-world. We had to learn fast—LinkedIn deep-dives, cold emails, friend-of-a-friend intros. But it paid off. We saw a massive increase in people from the hip-hop community at our events afterward. That felt really rewarding.

**MELISSA**: We also heard over and over again how important it was for women to simply be in the same room. The dinner at the start of the mentorship program is what people loved the most. There’s something powerful that happens when you bring women together—an energy that’s hard to describe but so real.

#### **You’re doing events, dinners, mentorships, workshops—how do you keep it all going?**

**MELISSA**: We don’t sleep? [laughs] No, but really, we do this next to our full-time jobs. It’s a passion project, and that’s why we’ve been able to keep it up. We’re also now officially a foundation and part of the global shesaid.so collective, which has been around for ten years.

**CONNIE**: One thing that really keeps us going is the feedback from people. The community is so appreciative and so ready for this. We’re always evolving, always learning. We even have a Google Doc called “Things We’ve Learned” that’s basically a list of mistakes and “never again”s. But it’s all part of it.

#### **I read you’re organizing a workshop that asks people to bring a male colleague. Why that format?**

**CONNIE**: Because if we want actual change, men need to be part of the conversation. Otherwise, we’re just preaching to the choir. We’re doing a workshop on unconscious bias where everyone brings a man. Half the spots are for people from major music companies, the other half is open. We want to create a space where men can ask questions, make mistakes, and learn—without being shut down immediately.

**MELISSA**: We’ve realized a lot of men want to be allies but just don’t know how. They’re afraid of saying the wrong thing, of being the “white knight.” We want to give them a space where they can figure it out with us. And yes, women have biases too. Everyone does. It’s just about recognizing them and trying not to act on them.

#### **Is it frustrating that you have to do this kind of work? That the industry isn’t taking more responsibility?**

**CONNIE**: It’s definitely overwhelming sometimes. There are so many layers to the problem—safety at festivals, language used in studios, the casual nature of the industry itself. It’s built in a way that’s inherently unsafe. But we’re hopeful. We believe in change through education, and we’re seeing it happen. Slowly, but it’s happening.

**MELISSA**: Gen Z gives me so much hope. They don’t take shit. They’re going to come in and demand sober studio sessions if that’s what they need to feel safe—and that’s exactly the kind of shift we need. You can make it more formal without losing the vibe or without losing the creativity. It’s not one or the other.

#### **What’s your biggest dream for shesaid.so Amsterdam?**

**MELISSA**: An award ceremony. Like the Women in Music Awards in the UK. A night where we just celebrate our community. Loudly. Publicly.

**CONNIE**: That’s a bit un-Dutch, isn’t it? But yeah, we’ll do it anyway. We deserve to take up space.

#### **When you were freelancing, why did you feel journalism wasn't the right fit for you?**

I started with a clear vision of becoming a serious journalist. I enjoyed writing about everyday topics: things that might not immediately catch your eye but are interesting when you delve deeper – like stories about how our phone addiction is similar to substance addiction and how we’re having more unprotected sex and getting more STDs. I always tried to make my stories human and relevant by connecting them to sociological research. Although I wrote for well-known outlets like Het Parool and VICE, I wasn’t happy because I often felt lonely in the process. Feedback was limited, and I was insecure about my pieces. What struck me was that I was mostly focusing on earning my place in the journalism industry, hoping for approval from respected journalists. What also annoyed me was that not many people that I initially wrote the articles for – people of my age group – were actually reading them. When I posted my stories on social media, I received positive reactions from my peers, but none of them ever read the whole story. Those two insights troubled me. I thought: isn’t journalism supposed to be for – and read by – the people that it’s meant for?

#### **By stepping away from writing, wouldn’t you only reduce your chances of reaching people?**

Making the decision to quit writing was surprisingly freeing. I had struggled with trying to fit into the typical image of a journalist – it just never really suited me. At the same time, I decided to give up alcohol and drugs, which remarkably cleared my mind, allowing me to foster new ideas and improve my self-image. This personal change led me to realize that my journey might need to diverge from the conventional paths in journalism. Moreover, it became clear to me that it wasn’t just me who was failing to connect with the younger audience—journalism as a whole seemed to be losing its grip on the youth, despite their keen interest in the world around them. Coupled with my frustration over how deeply young people, myself included—I’m a real doom-scroller–, were immersed in social media, I was inspired to create @snackpaper_. This platform is designed to bridge the gap, leveraging social media’s pervasive influence to engage young people with news in a format that resonates with them. So to answer your question, I feel like my chances of reaching the right people will only increase!

#### **And what is @snackpaper_?**

@snackpaper_, a project of the Jong Belezen Foundation that I co-founded with three friends, aims to reach young audiences with journalistic content, transforming newspaper content into engaging videos on social media: Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Short. We use influencer strategies to share this content.

#### **You call yourself a doom-scroller, but you still choose social media as a platform to achieve your goals. Why is that?**

Haha, true. I can really lose myself in scrolling through TikTok videos, hours get lost—which I hate. But don’t we all? Social media has immense power. It can completely consume us even more than books or newspapers ever did. Despite the negative aspects they can have on us – by detaching us from the real world – I believe we can use that power as an opportunity: to spread common knowledge and create connections. That’s what we tend to do with @snackpaper_. I thought if we’re already spending so much time on these apps, why not combine the endless scrolling with good pieces from reputable journalists and media?

#### **As a freelancer, you felt lonely. How is that now, since you work with a team?**

As the executive director of our foundation, I now work closely with four interns. If you’ve ever entered the fourth floor of BounceSpace at Overtoom, we’re hard to miss – haha. It's inspiring to work with young people and provide them with the guidance I missed when I was starting out. Although mentoring is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the job, it also brings challenges, like constantly balancing HR tasks and my own creative focus. It's like needing eight tentacles to juggle everything. I'd love to have someone beside me who shares my vision, but we didn’t find that perfect person yet.

#### **Are you meant to be a boss?**

Haha, that’s a good question. I think so, yes. I enjoy “being the boss”. But I'm not the boss who says, "I know better." I lead in a vulnerable way. Although I'm in charge, I know I don't always have all the answers and depend on my team.

What I also love about having started my own business is how valuable my social skills have become. Connecting people comes naturally to me, so I want to keep on deploying that throughout my work in media. During my master's in journalism I learned about the forces of media, how they influence our thinking, how they create frameworks for how we interpret reality and how journalism could bridge our differences and contribute to creating a sort of common sense. I believe that traditional journalism isn't reaching its full potential at the moment, so I'm exploring new methods to enhance its impact.

#### **So connecting sounds like your mission, but aren’t you worried about losing connection with yourself while constantly seeking to connect with others?**

Hmmm, valid point. At times, I question the purpose of it all, especially when our efforts yield only a few likes or we receive negative comments on our videos. Social media can be a harsh environment, and running a startup means having little free time. Taking part in the so-called “rat race” can be overwhelming, and I'm not very good at relaxing, so there are moments when I do feel disconnected from myself but I’m working on that with a business coach. However, the ability to create something new every day with @snackpaper_ is a privilege many people working for a boss can only dream of.

#### **What about your dreams? Where will this freedom to create lead you?**

I'm very optimistic about the future. My role as a public speaker complements my work at @snackpaper_, allowing me direct interaction with audiences. I aim to expand my presence at events focused on news literacy and journalism to establish myself as an authority in the field. While the Netherlands is progressive in media trust, there remains widespread misunderstanding about different perspectives. I see the way we approach the news at @snackpaper_, with combining influencer methods and journalism – as “newsfluencers” – as a vital tool to bridge these gaps. My ambitions extend beyond our borders, seeking collaborations with like-minded individuals to strengthen our initiatives. Our ultimate goal is to foster greater understanding among people. This journey with @snackpaper_ is just the beginning.

#### Let’s start at the beginning. How did ted. come to life?

It started really small, without a plan. About four and a half years ago we moved into our new home and bought a few secondhand furniture pieces. I started selling a few of them, then buying others—it was just a fun cycle. I think a lot of people start that way. At some point I realised I had built up a small collection that didn’t fit in our house anymore. That’s when ted. really began: from the love of hunting, curating, and finding joy in objects. Eventually we got our own studio space. From there, we started renting it out for photo shoots, events, even dinner parties. It just kept growing.

#### How do you explain what ted. is now? A store? A studio? A gallery?

It’s really all of those things. We sell furniture, we rent it out, and we also rent out the studio itself. It’s not a classic store with opening hours—you visit us by appointment. The furniture pieces are for sale, but also for rent if someone needs them for a shoot or a project. There’s a lot of flexibility in how people interact with the space. I love that. People can visit, have coffee, look around, and maybe fall in love with a chair or a table. If it’s for sale, it’s yours. Some pieces we keep only for rentals—those are our treasures. But most things? They’re ready for a new home.

#### And now a little piece of ted. lives at BounceSpace. How did that collaboration come about?

That’s such a nice connection. It started a year ago—I did the styling for an event at BounceSpace. After that we stayed in touch, and you mentioned needing new chairs. We had just received these amazing Brunner chairs—super popular at the moment, and available in lots of colours. So we curated a little corner that would match the communal table at BounceSpace. Now there’s a slice of ted. living there. I love that it’s not branded or obvious—it just fits in naturally, like it belongs. That’s very much the spirit of both our spaces, I think.

#### Your aesthetic is so specific—playful, a bit nostalgic, but also fresh. How do you decide what belongs in your collection?

It’s all gut feeling. I don’t follow trends. If something catches my eye and gives me energy, I go for it. If I hesitate, even a little bit, it’s a no. I don’t try to force pieces into the collection. It has to click. I think a good piece has presence—it can be about colour, shape, patina, or even just attitude. We source items from everywhere—online, in shops, at markets. And we ship worldwide too. The beauty is in the mix. I never wanted a showroom that felt stiff or overly styled. ted. should feel like stepping into a story you didn’t know you were part of yet.

#### So what’s the story behind one of your favourite pieces?

Oh, there are so many stories. A recent one I love: I found this incredible vintage lamp in Morplus. I bought it for the studio, but then we ended up moving into a new house—literally one block from where I picked up the lamp. So it came with us. It feels like it was meant to be. Another moment that stuck with me: a couple came to pick up some chairs, and when they arrived, they brought us homemade yoghurt and milk from their farm as a thank-you. That kind of warmth—that’s what makes this work so rewarding. It’s not just business. It’s personal.

#### You live and work in Amsterdam—how does this city influence what you do?

I love Amsterdam. I’m from the east of the Netherlands, so when I first moved here, it felt huge. But now, 15 years later, it’s like a village. The energy is inspiring—there are art galleries, music venues, creative events happening constantly. You bump into people, ideas, and opportunities. And what I really appreciate is seeing other entrepreneurs experiment. That gives me energy. Everyone’s trying something—seeing what works, what doesn’t. That makes me feel like it’s okay to try, too. It’s not about perfect execution—it’s about momentum.

#### And what do you think ted. gives back to Amsterdam?

Colour! Not just literally, but in energy too. I don’t think there are many stores in Amsterdam quite like ours—especially with the balance of vintage and modern, and the way we curate. We also get a lot of tourists who follow us on Instagram and message me like, “I’m in town, can I visit?” That’s always fun. I like being a hidden spot people seek out. It’s not flashy, but if you know—you know.

#### Your Instagram looks like a magazine. How does it fit into your creative process?

It’s become a really important part of our business, even though it started so casually. I post something and someone on the other side of the world sends a message asking if they can buy it. We’ve shipped pieces to South Korea, the U.S., Taiwan—you name it. I never expected that. The reach is wild. But what I love most is that it connects us to people who really care about design. It’s not about numbers—it’s about resonance.

#### Last critical question—do you ever feel the pressure to scale up, turn this into a “real company”?

Good one. Yes, sometimes. People ask if we’ll open a second space or hire a big team. But right now, it works because it’s small. It’s personal. I like knowing every piece, every person who visits. Maybe we’ll grow in our own way, but never at the cost of what makes ted. feel like ted. That’s the promise I’ve made to myself.

#### So what’s next?

No big master plan. Just keep going with curiosity. Keep creating. Keep feeling. And if it brings joy—then I know I’m on the right path.

#### **When people ask you at a party what you do, what do you say?**

**D:** I tell them I’m a cook. That’s the short answer. The longer story? My brother and I started cooking together about five years ago. It began with an abundance of vegetables from our parents’ garden — a proper Burgundian jungle filled with forgotten vegetables, rare herbs, and around 190 types of tomatoes. We started making menus for friends and family, and that blossomed into *Bruur Culinair*. We now cater weddings and private dinners, all on location, using seasonal produce straight from that magical garden.

#### **Hold on — 190 types of tomatoes? I thought there was just... one.**

**D:** Haha, that’s a common reaction. But truly — there are thousands of tomato varieties. Our parents have a greenhouse with nearly 190 kinds alone. Each one has its own flavor profile, texture, and story. When they're in season — usually July or August — we serve them almost untouched: just olive oil, sea salt, and pepper. That’s enough. The flavor is already there if you just let nature do her thing.

#### **So your menu depends on what grows in your parents’ garden?**

**D:** Exactly. We let the garden guide us. We’re constantly experimenting — recently with fermentation — so we can use the harvest year-round. And that garden isn’t just a source of food; it’s a place of gathering. We sometimes host dinners there, and my other brother joined me and my brother on our new concept dinner *Zin•tuig*: a full sensory dinner where people don’t just eat — they experience. We walk them through the garden, tell the stories behind the ingredients, and serve an eight-course meal that appeals to all the senses. Smell, touch, taste, sound — it’s all part of the evening. The goal is simple: to reconnect people to their food — and to each other.

#### **That’s beautiful. Was the garden always this special to you growing up?**

**D:** Not consciously. As kids, it was just the backyard — a place to play, hang out, maybe get roped into some weeding. The deeper appreciation came later. Only recently have I realized how lucky we were to grow up with that access to nature and flavor. Now, helping my parents maintain it and learning from them every week, it feels like a legacy I’m part of.

#### **And you do all this with your family? That can be intense. No arguments?**

**D:** No fights yet, no. We actually work really well together. It helps that we were raised in a family where communication mattered. My parents are still very involved — we garden together every week. It’s all rooted in love and trust. Of course we argue sometimes — we’re siblings — but the shared vision pulls us together. Even our sister is active on the land; she uses the garden for retreats and lectures. That place is becoming a kind of family HQ. We each have our own projects, but everything grows from the same soil.

#### **Was building a community around the garden always part of the plan?**

**D:** Maybe not at first, but it’s becoming the heart of what we do with *Bruur Culinair*. Food has this beautiful way of opening people up. It’s intimate, it’s universal, and it creates space for conversation — or just quiet company. If we can nourish someone’s body and spirit, that’s success. And it doesn’t have to be grand. A single evening, a shared laugh, a feeling of being seen — that’s already enough. We don’t need a big platform to make a difference. Just a table, a plate, and a bit of attention.

#### **That sounds like we must make a bit more time for eating?**

**D:** Exactly. In our part of the world, food is often treated as fuel — something to squeeze in between appointments. But in other cultures I’ve visited, like Japan or parts of Africa, food is a moment. It demands attention. It brings people together. Here in Brabant, we’re already a bit more Burgundian by nature — we enjoy the long table, the good glass of wine. I just want to stretch that moment even further. Add intention. Create space for connection, especially for those who don’t often get invited to the table.

#### **You seem really happy. But what’s the dream now? What’s next?**

**D:** Honestly? Keep doing this. Stay curious. Keep enjoying it. We want to grow *Bruur Culinair*and*Zin•tuig* without losing the intimacy — and start giving back more. Like inviting people from our village or community who might be lonely, or who could use a warm meal and a moment of connection. If we can be a tiny spark in their day — that’s what it's about. Food has that power.

#### **When someone asks you at a party – “what do you do?” – what’s your go-to answer?**

**SEM:** Ugh. *The worst question,*right? But alright – usually I say, “Hi, I’m Sem. I run a design studio.” And then they ask what a design studio is. So I tell them:*MADEBYSEM* is a boutique studio that creates brand identities. That’s everything from the “who are we?” and “what do we stand for?” questions all the way to the execution – logos, websites, campaigns, photography, tone of voice. It’s visual, strategic, and emotional all at once.

#### **What pulled you into the world of design in the first place?**

**SEM:** I started at the Rietveld Academy, where I studied graphic design. But photography stole my heart along the way. It was an organic thing – friends asking me to shoot projects, fashion shoots, creative gigs – and suddenly, I was a photographer. But when COVID hit, everything changed. Studios shut down, teams couldn’t come together, and I realized I needed something I could do solo, from my desk. That’s when design came back full force.

Now I direct full creative brand identity design projects. I bring together a team of experts; copywriters, illustrators, webdesigners, photographers and sometimes I get back behind my camera and fill the role of photographer, just because I love the art form. I get energy from bringing people together and helping them do what they do best. That’s what I love the most.

#### **That sounds like a lot more than “just a logo.” Can you walk me through your process?**

**SEM:** Exactly – it’s never *just a logo*. People often come to me with that question, “Can you make me a logo?” And my response is: “Sure, but why?” What’s the story? What are you offering? Who’s it for? What’s the vibe, the energy, the culture you want to build? It’s all part of the brand identity.

Take Ceppi’s, for example – that fun Italian restaurant here in Amsterdam. The owners approached me at the Noordermarkt on a sunny Saturday. “Can you make us a logo?” Sure. But when we sat down here at BounceSpace for our first session, it quickly turned into a full brand strategy. What’s the best product? Who’s the ideal audience? What does the brand *feel* like? We guide our clients through that creative journey. It becomes a collaborative process of answering important questions from the product to the ideal clients experience, and that co-creation is what makes the work really powerful. That’s where the magic happens.

#### **You run your office at BounceSpace. What’s that like for you working at Bounce?**

**SEM:** BounceSpace has been massive for me. It’s not just a workspace – it’s a community. You bump into lawyers, DJ’s, hot yoga teachers, writers, different entrepreneurs. And the community is really sociable. Starting with a filter coffee in the morning is part of the routine. Talking to different business minded people at BounceSpace is great for development on entrepreneurship, tips on finance, and off course you’ll find me for Friday afternoon drinks. ;)

With the Vondelgym nextdoor it’s easy to stay fit and set your mind straight, feel the flow of your body and think of nothing else but stretching, lifting weights or hitting the bag. It’s great to balance the creative process of design with a great workout.

That’s the beauty of BounceSpace – these unexpected collisions, these learning moments. For someone who’s constantly balancing creativity with entrepreneurship, this place keeps me grounded and inspired.

#### **Speaking of balance – you’re clearly someone who creates from a deep, personal place. How do you manage the tension between making art and making money?**

**SEM:** That tension is real. And tricky. When you're an artist, you create because you *have* to. But when you're also a business owner, you need to make it viable. The Rietveld taught me to think like an artist – to break rules, to make from instinct. But they never taught us how to sell that art.

So now, with *MADEBYSEM*, I try to bridge that gap. I want my work to have soul, but also strategy. You have to know your audience. If someone tells me, “I want to sell my product to *everyone*,” I tell them they’re selling it to *no one*. You need to be specific. Intentional. Design isn’t just decoration. It's the art of shaping the perception of something. You want people to feel something and to connect with on an emotional level.

#### **And what about the little Sem? Was he always the creative kid?**

**SEM:** Always. I drew on everything – walls, clothes, my own skin. My mom just let me go wild. She didn’t stop me. The whole house was my canvas. She encouraged that exploration, and it gave me a kind of freedom early on that I still carry in my work today.

My doodles were weird – little creatures, abstract ideas, whatever was on my mind. But even then, I think I was just trying to express something. That hasn’t really changed.

#### **Do you ever reflect on what your work adds to the world? Beyond the design, what’s the bigger picture?**

**SEM:** Definitely. I think about that a lot. For me, creativity is connection. Whether it’s bringing a brand to life or bringing people together through an exhibition or dinner, it’s all about energy. Presence. Intention.

Last year I organized an event here at BounceSpace called “About Freaking Everything.” It was kind of a mini-retrospective – I printed fifteen years’ worth of work and hung it up. Some of it had been gathering digital dust on hard drives. But I wanted to celebrate it. Bring people together. Let the work live in the real world. That’s what drives me.

I dream about a MADEBYSEM merchandise collection in the future. So people can physically wear the brand. Wether it’s perfume, a fancy T-Shirt or a whole tennis tracksuit. Stay tuned for this journey of different collectibles!

#### **Are you ever afraid that AI will replace what you do?**

**SEM:** Haha, good one. Yes and no. I mean, sure – AI can generate a logo, write a tagline, even build a whole identity. And some clients will go that route. But what AI can’t replicate is *human presence.*The spark of a conversation. The moment someone tears up because you captured their story in a design. The stamp you physically press onto paper because it*feels* right.

Design is about more than output. It’s about the care and love and attention you pour into it. That can’t be faked. Not by a machine.

Nobody, including the crew, has ever done anything quite like that before. From the participants who bought a ticket to the Unknown, to the crew who signed up to co-create a journey there – everyone was facing their own unknown.

Our maroon sails and wooden hull were pommeled by the high seas in the first two days across IJsselmeer. Unfazed by the weather conditions: some of us grey from seasickness and others joyfully pulling the ropes and operating the whinges, we made it to the open Wadden Sea on Wednesday morning – when, at last, the weather gods have shown their mercy.

> When you leave things undefined, you make yourself vulnerable – but also: open to growth and lessons it may bring.

This shaped the entire experiment: people gradually opening up and feeling at ease: to show and share their own definition of Freedom. In a peculiar way, all 20 of us turned out to be “growth junkies” – people addicted – in one way or another – to expanding and exploring the outside of their comfort zones and social narratives. When you leave things undefined, you make yourself vulnerable – but also: open to growth and lessons such an experience may bring.

On Thursday 10 August – the 4th day of the journey – De Chateauroux has dryfallen. That morning each of us has woken up to being on a different planet. The world turned upside down: our ship anchored firmly to the bottom of the sea, wet sand reflecting the sky above: what’s up and what’s down wasn’t no longer clear - or relevant…

…but there was sunrise, there was music, there were people dancing to the beat of their hearts - and in that moment – it was all that mattered.

Shooting stars faithfully accompanied us every night: the ship quietly being lulled into slumber and people having their last conversations on deck before heading to bed – watching one of Nature’s most beautiful spectacles.

Sometimes the wind wasn’t in our favour, neither was the tide and sometimes we ran out of drinking water before reaching the next harbour – but the shared camaraderie on board made it part of the adventure. Under the knowing hand of our skipper and mate, all 5 of our sails were filled with wind: nothing but the force of nature pushing the ship, cutting through the waters – towards the next destination. And the one after that.

It’s going to take some time to comprehend exactly what the Freedom Expedition was - individually and as a community. It brought lessons to everyone and helped us forge beautiful connections. #### **That’s a beautiful ring you’re wearing. Can you tell me what it means to you?**

**Willem:** This ring is one of the most meaningful things I own. It was designed by my best friend, who made identical rings for me and my wife. She passed away last year after a long battle with cancer. Losing her has been a profound challenge—it’s like learning to live all over again. I carry this ring as both a memory of her and a reminder of the life we built together during our 18 incredible years of adventure, creativity, and love.

I met Silvia through a friend, and from the moment we started talking, I knew she was special. She had effortless confidence and a directness that I found captivating. When I suggested a restaurant for our first date, she said, “No, that place is too special. Let’s go to a pizzeria. If I don’t like you, I’ll just pay for my own pizza and leave.” I admired her honesty and independence—it was refreshing and rare. From the beginning, I knew she was extraordinary.

#### **Can you explain that feeling?**

**Willem:** Honestly, that spark is not something you can fully put into words. It’s a feeling—something that happens when you meet someone and instantly know they’re special. For me, it often starts with curiosity. I pay attention to how people carry themselves, how they look at the world. There’s so much you can tell just by looking into someone’s eyes.

Some of the most meaningful relationships in my life have begun with those moments. I’ve met people in the most unexpected ways—in a shop, at a gathering, or during a trip—and within minutes, I felt a connection that went far deeper than casual conversation. Often, we discovered shared passions: a love for adventure, touring on motorcycles, or exploring the vast landscapes of the USA. These shared experiences created bonds that felt more like a soul connection than friendship.

#### **Speaking of motorcycles, you didn’t start riding until your fifties. Why then?**

**Willem:** It was part of reinventing myself. After years of running an organic farm, I found myself craving freedom—both physically and emotionally. Motorcycling gave me that. There’s something raw and honest about being on a bike. Unlike driving a car, where you’re enclosed, on a motorcycle you’re part of the world around you. You feel the wind, smell the fields, and hear the hum of the road.

I ride Harley-Davidsons now because they’re about touring, not racing. It’s not about speed; it’s about the experience. Life is like that too. People get so focused on reaching the next milestone, they forget to enjoy the process. For me, the joy is in the journey—whether it’s riding through mountains or planting seeds on a farm.

#### **From the way that you look, I wouldn’t say you’d be a farmer. What inspired you to start?**

**Willem:** Well, I took quite an interesting detour. My father comes from a butcher’s family—but that field of work never really interested me. My parents met in Hong Kong, that’s where I was born. When I was six, we moved to Amsterdam. So you could say I was a city boy. But I was always drawn to nature, and my mother cared deeply about what we ate. I think that’s where my love for wholefoods started. But instead of following my gut straight away, I enrolled in psychology and economics at the University of Groningen. It just wasn’t it. What I liked most about studying in Groningen was the organic shop where I bought my vegetables. I realized I wasn’t made for a desk job. I wanted to work with my hands and do something meaningful. So I quit my studies and asked the farmer from the shop if I could work on her land in Friesland. That’s where I felt like I belonged and where my ‘career’ started.

There’s something deeply satisfying about working the land. I remember my first harvest of witloof, digging into the cold, dark soil and uncovering those pale roots—it felt like magic. Over time, I learned the rhythms of the earth, which crops thrived in which conditions, and how to work with nature rather than against it. I had my own ecological farm in Flevoland on which I mainly grew vegetables. Later, my wife and I planted a vineyard seven meters below sea level. We called it “Min 7.” It wasn’t just a farm; it was an art project, something we built together from the ground up.

#### **Organic farming in the polder sounds like it came with challenges. How were you received?**

**Willem:** Not easily. The polder is the heartland of conventional farming, and I didn’t fit their mold. I didn’t look like a farmer, and my methods—focusing on soil health, biodiversity, and natural cycles—were considered strange. But we proved it could work.

Our land became some of the most fertile in the region, teeming with earthworms and producing vibrant crops. At one point, we even received an award for having the best soil in the Netherlands. For me, that was the ultimate validation—knowing that we were leaving the earth better than we found it.

#### **BounceSpace’s building at Overtoom 141 has also been part of your family’s story. Can you share its history?**

**Willem:** My father bought the building in 1980. Back then, it was a factory for ball bearings, built with sleek glass and concrete. For its time, it was incredibly modern—an industrial structure with clean lines and lots of natural light. I think that’s part of what drew him to it. He had a deep appreciation for architecture and spaces with character, and I like to think that rubbed off on me.

Over the years, this building has seen so many transformations. After the factory closed, it housed many different projects. It became a youth center for Moroccan teens, then it was an art space, and for a while, the Stedelijk Museum even used it as a temporary home. Now BounceSpace and Vondelgym have been here for around 11 years. This building has always been more than just bricks and mortar. It’s interesting to see the building change over time by the people that give it life.

#### **Looking back on everything—from farming to motorcycles to friendships—how do you define your philosophy on life?**

**Willem:** For me, life is about embracing the journey with all its twists and turns. It’s not about rushing to a destination but about finding meaning in the moments along the way. Whether I’m cultivating the land, riding a motorcycle, or spending time with my children, I try to be present. These moments remind me what truly matters. Life rarely goes as planned, and the detours often lead to unexpected discoveries.

What ties it all together is the idea of connection—connection to the people who inspire me, to the land that grounds me, and to the values that guide me. Losing Silvia was the hardest detour of all. She was my partner in everything, and I miss her every day. But I’ve made a promise to myself to live fully again. One of the ways I do that is by losing myself in creativity—whether I’m painting, sculpting, or tending to my bees. When people ask me how I’m doing now, I tell them, “Fantastic.” Not because it’s easy, but because I want to focus on the good in my life. I carry her memory with me, but I’m also allowing myself to find joy again.

#### **Your label is called Disruptive Records. That’s a pretty bold name—what’s the story behind it?**

Ivo: The name came to me pretty instinctively—it just had a certain energy. I liked how it sounded, but over time I started to see how much it actually stood for the direction I wanted to take. It just clicked. "Disruptive" to some people felt negative, but to me, it was exactly the energy I wanted to tap into. It’s about going against the usual pattern, not following the industry template just because it's there. Whether in music, design, or life in general—I’m interested in the alternative routes, the ones that feel a bit more honest or original.

The funny thing is, someone once told me they thought the name had to do with vinyl—like a record getting stuck and making that crackling noise. That wasn’t the idea at all, but I kind of love that interpretation. It speaks to the lo-fi roots we started from, and this idea that imperfection can be beautiful too.

#### **So what did the early days of Disruptive look like? Was it all about calming music and lockdown vibes?**

Ivo: Pretty much, yeah, as it all started in 2020 during COVID. I had just moved into a new studio apartment in Amsterdam. With the world slowing down, it gave me space to reflect—and I realized I was craving a different kind of sound. Something softer, something that felt closer to home. I’d been working in the dance music industry, listening to high-energy tracks all day, but in my own time I craved the opposite. Lo-fi, ambient, piano... anything that helped me feel grounded. So I started making beats, just for fun. It wasn’t some big business idea. But then some of my friends from the dance scene got curious, and it snowballed from there.

It was really playful in the beginning. I was reconnecting with producing after years of mostly working behind the scenes. At the same time, I was already releasing music by my dad, who’s a pianist—something I’d actually started back in 2018. It lit something up in me, bringing a much deeper sense of connection and purpose. It felt like reconnecting not just with music, but with where I come from. Eventually we created a separate label for that, called Andante Piano. It’s named after a composition by my dad and granddad, actually—which makes it feel extra special to me.

#### **These days your work seems to be about more than music. There's this whole mission of helping people slow down. Where did that come from?**

Ivo: It evolved very naturally. As the label grew, so did the pressure—new responsibilities, employees, running a business in a post-COVID world. Suddenly life sped up again, and I found myself needing what our music offers: a moment to breathe. We started getting messages from listeners saying our tracks helped them through tough times, helped them focus, helped them *feel*. That was when we realized—this isn't just music, it’s something people lean on when they need it most.

It’s become part of how we do everything now. Our concerts are small, intimate. We ask people to be present, to really *listen*. Not through a screen, not through their Instagram stories, but in the room, together. It’s a beautiful thing when that lands. You see it in people’s eyes, in their stillness.

#### **I wanna hear more about these concerts!**

Ivo: As of last year, we started hosting Andante Piano Nights—a monthly concert in our recording studio with a limited number of people gathered closely around the piano. The lights are dimmed, and everyone is seated around the piano, just a few feet away from the artist. There’s no stage, no barrier—just everyone in the same room, together. You catch every little sound—the movement of the pianist, the pause before a note lands. Before the concert begins there’s the moment to have a drink, connect with other visitors. There we also encourage peopleto write down a prompt for the pianist to improvise on during an improvisational element. Something simple like *a rainy bike ride through Amsterdam*, or *a summer evening by the sea*. Later during the concerts, the pianist pulls one of these post-its from a bowl and turns that little idea into music on the spot. It’s quiet, reflective, and there’s always a moment where you realize:Everyone is just… there. Present.

#### **You speak about being present, but as a founder, you're wearing a million hats. How do you personally find balance in all that?**

Ivo: Haha, good question. It’s hard. I won’t lie. My role feels like five different jobs mashed together. One moment I’m thinking about branding or creative direction, the next I’m doing taxes or processing invoices. And I’ve definitely had moments where it got too much. 2022 and 2023 were a bit more intense sometimes. I felt my energy dip, and lost some excitement. That was a sign to take action, stop trying to do everything myself, and start relying more on the people around me.

This is part of the journey too, right? I always say our vision—“find your own sense of balance, anytime, anywhere”—applies to me just as much. I don’t have it all figured out either. But I've come to see that as growth, not failure.

#### **Disruptive Records is about more than just music now—it’s also a platform to challenge norms and make space for change. Tell me about ‘Keys for Change.’**

Ivo: Yeah, that’s something I’m genuinely proud of. It started when we looked at our roster and just wondered—wait, where are the women? Only a small part of our releases came from female composers, and so we decided to explore the barriers and challenges women face in the neoclassical and broader classical music landscapes.. We dug into it and learned so many new things—about historical gender roles in music, the lack of representation in music education and even how the design of the piano wasn’t exactly made with everyone in mind. It really made us think.

So we launched *Keys for Change*, a campaign during Women’s History Month including a collaborative album with works by female composers. It wasn’t just about releasing the music, it was about sharing the stories and experiences of the women we work with, and using that to highlight the imbalance and actively shift it. Since then, more women have been submitting their work to us, and that also feels like a real step forward. It’s a small start, but if this campaign helps amplify more female voices, then we know we’re moving in the right direction.

#### **And now you’re bringing the music back to BounceSpace. What’s the plan?**

Ivo: Yeah, I’m super excited about this as it feels like a full-circle moment! We had our own office space at BounceSpace for a year in 2023, and that time gave us space to breathe and grow. Now we’re about to host a brand new collaborative event with BounceSpace, starting soon. Saturday mornings, people can come in, even in their pajamas if they want, and just listen while enjoying a coffee and pastry. No big lights or flashy performances. Just a pianist, people in the room, and a shared moment of calmth to start your weekend.

For me, that’s what it’s all about—creating experiences that feel human, warm, and real. Especially now, when everything feels so fast and overwhelming, we need these small collective pauses.

#### **So... are you a scientist who dances, or a dancer who builds robots?**

**Kim:** I love that question—and honestly, I think I’m both. I work as an assistant professor in AI and robotics, so yes, I spend a lot of time thinking about algorithms, behavior, movement—how machines can interact with the world in more human-friendly ways. But before and alongside all of that, I’ve been dancing since I was young. I trained in ballet, danced in a company in Lebanon for six years, and today I explore contemporary dance, flamenco, and improvisation.

There was a time when I thought these two paths had to stay separate—one in the lab, the other on the stage. But the more I worked, the more I saw the connections. Both fields are about movement. About sensing and responding. About presence. In robotics, I explore how a system can learn from interaction. In dance, I do that with my body. It’s not just that they inform each other—they feed each other. My work lives in that intersection. So, am I a dancer who builds robots? Yes. And a scientist who dances. One gives structure. The other brings it to life.

#### **You’re originally from Lebanon. Has your upbringing there influenced the work you do now?**

**Kim:** Absolutely. Growing up in Lebanon meant living in a context that was constantly politically unstable. There was fire everywhere—literally and metaphorically. War, explosions… that kind of external chaos meant I didn’t really need to cultivate my own inner fire. It was already there, burning all around me. But after leaving Lebanon—after moving to places like the US, Portugal, and then the Netherlands—I had to learn how to find that fire within myself. More recently, I’ve taken up flamenco dancing, which is also deeply about inner fire and self-expression. That contrast between outer instability and inner calm—or vice versa—has been a running theme in my life.

#### **You talk about dance with such emotion. What does it mean to you?**

**Kim:** Dance is where I feel most alive. It's a practice, a language, a way of thinking. I trained in ballet and contemporary dance. Ballet is about discipline, structure, pushing the body to its limits. Contemporary dance offers more fluidity and expression. But for me, the most meaningful shift happened when I discovered improvisation—it changed my entire view of dance. It’s not just about performance anymore; it’s about being present, about listening to my deepest intuition. Sometimes when I dance, especially when I improvise, it feels like I’m activating a completely different part of my brain. It’s a kind of high—almost psychedelic. And there’s this visceral quality—it doesn’t come from the mind or even the heart, but from the guts. It’s a way to make sense of the world through the body in stead of the mind, and in that way, it’s very close to science.

#### **Close to science? Explain—how are the worlds of robotics and dance connected for you?**

**Kim:** Most people see dance and robotics as opposites, but for me, they’re deeply connected. In both, you're dealing with movement, embodiment, communication—just through different mediums. I started in robotics by exploring how robots could express internal states using non-verbal cues, like lights or patterns. We even brought puppeteers and dancers into our lab to show us how they would want robots to move. I think we’ve barely scratched the surface when it comes to understanding how technology and performance can inform each other. One thing I’m especially curious about is how we can get robots to improvise—not just repeat pre-programmed movements, but actually respond and adapt like a human or a dancer would. It’s about bringing creativity and openness into tech design.

#### **You sound so positive talking about AI. It feels like many people are hesitant, even fearful of it. Can you understand why?**

**Kim:** I completely understand, and I think the fear is valid—but often misplaced. We tend to fear what we don’t understand. AI gets wrapped up in these apocalyptic narratives about robots taking over the world. But the real risks are often more mundane—like bias, privacy issues, and the reinforcement of inequalities. These are the problems we need to focus on. That’s why I push for a more social, user-centered approach in my research. I believe the people who will use these technologies should be part of the design process from the very beginning. Not just as subjects, but as collaborators. In one of our ongoing projects, we are including people with strong negative attitudes toward AI in our studies—not to convince them otherwise, but to understand them better. That’s the only way to build technology that truly empowers people.

#### **That sounds like a very human approach to tech. How do you bring that into your work at the university?**

**Kim:** I teach and research in a group called “Social AI” at the VU, which focuses on exactly that—making technology more human-centered. I’m interested in how robots can learn from the people they interact with, kind of like apprentices. Not these perfect machines out of the box, but systems that evolve and adapt. That opens up possibilities not just for efficiency, but for creativity, co-creation, and even play. I also want to explore how to apply these ideas in healthcare—especially elderly care. For example, robots that help elderly people stay independent rather than replacing human contact. It’s not about replacing people, but about giving individuals more autonomy and dignity. That’s what excites me—using tech not to fix problems for people, but with them.

And interestingly, we’ve found that people often respond better to robots when we stop trying to make them overly human. In our research, we ask whether people prefer pet-like robots or human-like ones, and time and time again, they choose the pet. It’s about companionship without the uncanny pressure of trying to mimic a person. Think about how you train a dog—you use signals, tone, repetition. That’s the kind of interaction I’m interested in enabling between humans and robots. Less about control, more about relationship.

#### **Do you feel a responsibility to bring something back to Lebanon—either as a scientist or as an artist?**

**Kim:** I do—but it’s not in the way people might expect. I don’t go back with the intention of setting up a tech lab or teaching AI. Lebanon isn’t necessarily waiting for robotics. What it’s really yearning for is connection—space to breathe, to feel, to grieve, to imagine again. That’s the work I try to do when I’m there. Every time I return, I offer something small and personal. Last time I was home, I hosted a small gathering where people improvised with their voices. Some sang, others whispered or made sounds they didn’t know they had in them. And it was magical—because it wasn’t about performance, it was about presence. In a place where so much has been taken—trust, stability, safety—these kinds of moments offer something back. Not as a solution, but as a gesture of hope.

What I hope to offer Lebanon is not a product, but a reminder: that creativity is survival, that embodiment is healing, and that even in the ruins, time and time again, something beautiful can still rise. If I can help nurture that—just a little—then I’ve done what I came to do. Because whether it's in Beirut or Amsterdam, for me, creating is about building worlds that feel, not just ones that function.

#### So Rowan, kickboxing or cutting hair?

That’s easy, kickboxing for sure. Cutting hair doesn't even excite me as much anymore. I've been doing it for fifteen years, every damn day—it has become so automatic. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy making people look and feel beautiful, bringing them joy, and getting the opportunity to really connect with them. But it can also be exhausting - repeating the same conversation ten times a day... What’s really been a game-changer for me, is entrepreneurship. That’s where I find happiness.

#### Did you realise that when you opened up your own shop?

It's only been in the past five years that entrepreneurship became a priority for me: I finally feel like my true self. When the opportunity came to take over the shop I worked in, I didn’t hesitate. I called the store "[New Chapter](https://www.newchapterstudio.com)", because it represented a fresh start for me, and many people visit a hairdresser when they are embarking on a new phase in their lives, such as starting a new job or ending a relationship. I absolutely adore being self-employed and constantly explore new ventures. What I love most is the extensive and diverse network of inspiring individuals I've built through my shop. I've met people from all corners of the city. With some I’ve made interesting connections on a creative level. I see it as a vast network of creative entrepreneurs, where we all support each other’s projects and ideas.

#### It sounds like you make new friends every day.

Not every day, but I do encounter a special mix of individuals. Interestingly, even those I initially have preconceived notions about, often prove me wrong. It's a valuable lesson I've learned at BounceSpace. Sometimes, I may not like someone based on my first impression, but when I take the time to get to know them, I sometimes realize we have a lot in common or that they have a great sense of humor. I'm becoming increasingly aware of this, and I'm striving to be less judgmental, although that remains a work in progress.

#### Did you have a habit of being overly judgmental?

Well, I used to complain quite a bit—okay, a lot. I'd nag just for the sake of it. However, after reading the book "You Are What You Think", I've made an effort to bring positive energy into my work. And as the “boss”, I feel responsible to convey that positivity to others.

#### And how’s that going?

I am putting in a lot of effort. Besides, when I set my mind to something, I give it my all and pursue it with unwavering determination. This applies to my entrepreneurial endeavors as well. Although sometimes that can be seen as impulsive. Three years ago, I had the idea of opening a plant store, and before I knew it, the entire shop was filled with cacti. I'm absolutely enamored with cacti. They possess a unique beauty—prickly yet captivating.

#### Does that say something about you?

Perhaps it does, haha. Initially, I tend to keep people at arm's length. I am quite guarded. People who try too hard to impress should steer clear of me. However, if someone gives me time and allows the relationship to develop naturally, I think, "Now we can have a real conversation." Once I realize someone’s chill, I can be very easygoing and kind-hearted.

#### It seems like you have a clear sense of yourself and what you want.

I don't consider myself overly determined, although I've been told otherwise. I try not to dwell on decisions but just act upon them. For example with [Colliers](https://www.studiocolliercollier.com/), the dog collar brand I started: I had an idea, and I thought, "Why not create a website and see where it takes me?" Entrepreneurship is an inherent part of who I am. While others may see obstacles along the way, I think, "Let's go!" Same goes for the pop ups we organized at New Chapter. It started as an impulsive idea, to “play restaurant” for the night. So one day we transformed the shop into a restaurant, with haute cuisine dinner, white tablecloths and romantic candle light. What began as an impromptu fine dining affair soon evolved into a lively party, drawing a big crowd. Although organizing everything took considerable time and effort, the outcome was certainly worth it, prompting us to embrace this venture more frequently. Ideally, I'd love to embrace that entrepreneurial spirit and travel the world. However, being away from the store is challenging. I still feel deeply connected to it—the pillar of the business.

#### A pillar?

Yes, I feel responsible for the store's vibe and feeling. New Chapter reflects my character and values. Everything, from the interior design to the music playing and the artwork by upcoming artists on the walls, is a testament to my belief in giving people opportunities, forming connections, and surrounding myself with good-hearted individuals. I rely on my colleagues immensely; I couldn't do it without them. Being the owner isn't a big thing for me—–I'm indifferent to that. In fact, Indy, my dog, is the true face of New Chapter. Indy always greets visitors with a wagging tail at the entrance. Well, not always... He and I are much alike. So, whether someone comes in for a cup of coffee, a fresh haircut, or a lick from Indy, they're welcome at New Chapter. In that way I can practice that coveted positive attitude of mine at the same time ;)

#### **If someone met you at a party, how would you explain what you do?**

Ainhoa: It really depends on my mood. Some days I say I'm in marketing, some days I say I'm an artist. Because I truly am both. I studied advertising and worked in offices full-time for years, but five years ago I started painting again—at first just after work, late at night. Eventually, I moved to Australia because many of my clients were there. That’s when I made the switch and started living fully as an artist. But even then, I missed the marketing world. That part of me didn’t disappear. Now, I’ve found this perfect balance where I do both: some days are for painting, others are for marketing work. I think I’ve finally found my sweet spot.

#### **That sounds ideal—but also intense. Do the two sides of your work feed each other?**

Ainhoa: Yes, in a way. Both sides are creative. In marketing, I work mostly in influencer campaigns. I design creative briefings, come up with strategies—it’s very people-focused and conceptual. And painting is the opposite in a way: slow, internal, silent. But they help each other. Marketing keeps me connected with people, and painting keeps me connected with myself. #### **Speaking of boredom—you’re also exploring that theme in your work, right?**

Ainhoa: Yeah! Actually, just this morning I wrote something in my notebook about it. I think we’re losing our ability to be bored—especially young people who’ve grown up with TikTok and endless scrolling. But boredom is necessary. It’s where creativity comes from. I’m very active by nature, always doing something. During lockdown, I thought I would go crazy. But then I started painting seriously again and discovered how much I loved slowing down. Now I paint people doing nothing. Just sitting, reading, thinking. I paint those moments of stillness because I think we all need more of them.

#### **Where do you find your subjects?**

Ainhoa: Everywhere. Sometimes I see people in cafés or on the street, and they’re so focused on something—just quietly present. I snap a quick photo (like a paparazzi!) and then paint them later. One day I’d love to start reaching out to them—so stay tuned, because you might get a DM or email from me saying this time, it’s you who made it to the canvas. That said, I also enjoy keeping them a secret. I like the mystery of it. I imagine who they are, what they’re thinking. I tell stories through them. It’s easier than telling stories about myself

#### **Why is that? Why is it hard to talk about yourself?**

Ainhoa: I’m shy. I don’t like being the center of attention. That’s also why I love marketing—but not when it’s for myself. I can build a great social media strategy for a brand, no problem. But when it’s for my own paintings, I overthink everything. How much should I share? What tone should I use? It’s too personal. That’s why I prefer to talk about the people I paint, not about me.

#### **How has being from the Basque Country shaped you?**

Ainhoa: A lot. I’m from Bilbao—a small city with a slow lifestyle, but also a lot of culture. We have the Guggenheim Museum, we have both the sea and the mountains, and a very rich food tradition. And of course, we also have our *cuadrillas*, which means your group of friends. It’s not just a group—it’s a community. You don’t have to plan anything. You just show up at the same bars on a Thursday for *pincho pote*—one drink, one snack, one euro. That kind of culture taught me how important community is, and I guess that’s also why I’ve always looked for it in the places I’ve lived: Barcelona, Melbourne, now here in Amsterdam.

#### **And how’s Amsterdam treating you so far?**

Ainhoa: I love it. Dutch people are very direct—just like in the Basque Country. I felt that immediately when I got here. It’s a good mix of people from all over the world, which I also enjoy. And I’ve been lucky: I already had a friend here who introduced me to others, so making connections wasn’t difficult. But even if it had been, I think I would have found my way. Moving countries teaches you that—you learn to trust the process.

#### **You sound calm about uncertainty. Were you always like that?**

Ainhoa: Not really. When I decided to quit my job and move to Australia, it was the first time I told myself, okay, *let’s do things differently*. I had always worked for companies, followed a structure, had a plan. But I wanted to give myself the chance to just experience things—to see what it would be like to be a freelancer, without knowing exactly how it would go. It was scary, of course. There’s a lot of uncertainty, and that can be stressful. But I’ve learned to trust the process. I still don’t know exactly what’s next, but I try to let things unfold. That mindset helps me feel calmer now.

At the same time, I constantly contradict myself—haha. I always say: I don’t like routine—but I need it. And I hate being out of my comfort zone—but I’m constantly looking for it. Moving to a new country is hard, it’s stressful… and yet, I keep doing it. I guess I’m just a very contrasting person. And somehow, I’ve learned to be okay with that. I don’t need to figure it all out. I just need to keep moving forward.

#### **That’s beautiful. Is there a piece you’ve made that you’re really proud of?**

Ainhoa: Yes—two actually. One was the first painting I ever sold. That was the first moment I thought—maybe I can really do this. The second painting that's special to me was a commission from an interior design studio I absolutely love, but the real surprise came when I sent the painting to its destination in France and realized it was going to be hung in a castle. What made it even more special was that the client and I started exchanging messages later on. She’s originally from Australia, and she began sharing café recommendations and places to visit in Melbourne. That’s what I love most about art—it creates these real, surprising, genuine connections.

Right now, I’m giving myself space to experience. To create. To notice what shows up. Maybe at some point I’ll go back to working for a company. Maybe I’ll stay on this path and see where it takes me. I don’t know. But I trust that I’ll figure it out. I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again. For now, I just keep painting, keep creating, keep moving. One step at a time.

Burdened but blessed with a neurodiverse brain, I’m able to view things from a different perspective as the mass. I’m saying blessed because I now see being neurodiverse as a beautiful enrichment to my life and art. I was always told that the way I perceived the world wasn’t reality. Throughout the journey of life, I discovered, that just because there is a majority that sees things in a certain way, it doesn’t mean it can be labeled wrong or right. I have always sought to explore and unravel the deeper layers of how I experience the world and how that correlates to how others perceive the world. Through my work, I want to celebrate that diversity.

In my art, I seek to answer the question of what reality is. For me, there is no defined answer to this question, but it has all to do with perspective. What constitutes reality to me is always in motion. The question "How did I view the world as a child?" invariably plays a significant role in this. As a child, I was fascinated by the structures and movements in nature, and still I calm my mind by carefully observing plants and insects in their environment. It’s this act of observing that is still present during the creation of my art.

My work at BounceSpace consists of a series of art pieces I’ve been working on for over a year. I was able to realize the series by bringing different fields of art together, while the process of creation is built up in different stages. I’ve used both a selection of paintings and work that I created as a kid as new drawings, paintings and collages for the first stage. There is a sense of complete freedom entering the first stage as there is no plan or intention except for the intent to create.

Subsequently, I use photography and various elements to create optical illusions. I never know what the final results will be and when I will feel content with them. The entire process I create using my intuition. Most of my work is deliberately untitled, in order to allow the space for free interpretation.

The creation of my art manifests itself in several forms. There has been a period I was more involved with photography and video. Within my current style of creating, I use various techniques that allow me to showcase the multiple layers of which my work is composed. For me, slowing down in the process and dissecting the different layers reflects the Hindu philosophy of Satcitananda that I'm heavily intrigued by. Satcitananda represents "truth, consciousness, bliss", and it's a philosophy that helps me shape my reality and perspective while it motivates me to keep exploring the different observations of reality. Because these elements are constantly in motion, so is my art.

#### **Moving from software engineering to art is quite a leap. Can you tell us more about this change?**

I was teaching programming and had a successful remote job as a software engineer. I loved coding and was becoming pretty successful in the industry. But when I turned 30, I had a bit of a crisis. I realized I was burned out, bored and how my work lacked the meaningful impact I craved. Seeking change, I resigned last January and spent three months in Mexico, indulging in yoga, surfing, and painting, which felt incredibly therapeutic.

#### **Is that when you decided to become a painter?**

Well, it’s a funny story. Painting has been a hobby since childhood, but I lacked the confidence to share my work publicly. But in the co-living in Mexico, a guy approached me while I was making a painting. He asked me what I was doing in Mexico, so I told him that I was taking a break from work, painting a bit. He replied: ‘Oh, so you’re a painter?’. To hear that sentence coming from someone just made so much sense. It resonated, and I was like you know what: this will be my “fuck it year”. I decided to be a painter.

#### **Transitioning careers so dramatically must have had a significant impact. How has this change shaped your life?**

This transition has been both a challenge and a liberating experience in stepping away from conventional roles. When I got back to Amsterdam, I found a creative space in an anti-kraak near Skatecafe, a spacious warehouse where I now create my art. It feels like a true fit. Interestingly, my past isn't entirely left behind. I used to spend my days at the coworking space of Bouncespace, and I still find myself drawn there for certain tasks. It's a blend of the old and new in my life, symbolized by the exhibition we've set up there. It's a testament to how life can evolve yet hold onto its essence.

#### **How have you been managing financially?**

Honestly, it's tough. Thankfully, my previous career provided a financial cushion. However, thanks to my background in business administration, I approach my art like a lean startup.

#### **What do you mean by that?**

Well, my experience in business and tech has been invaluable. I view my art not solely as creative expression but also as a product in the market. This perspective has opened doors to collaborations because I reach out to hotels, restaurants and cafes. There's currently work exhibited at Hotel No Hotel and I just finished an exhibition at W Hotel. Coming up is Vatten Ramen and Bar Do. And Ceppi's recently commissioned me to some work for their restaurant. I mean, it’s a good start.

#### **So, do you consider yourself more of a businesswoman in the art world?**

I'd say I'm an entrepreneur at heart. Whether it's coding or painting, it's all about creating something valuable. My business intuition allows me to understand the market dynamics and continuously adapt my art based on feedback. I believe blending business insights with artistic creativity is key to success in any field.

#### **The art industry is known for its competitiveness and male dominance. How do you navigate these challenges and envision your path to success?**

Success in any field, especially as a self-employed individual, is fraught with challenges like fluctuations, rejections, and learning to manage fear and instability. It's about celebrating every small victory and progressing step by step. I believe that working with passion and authenticity resonates with people, which has already helped me start selling my art. There's a significant story behind my art, transitioning from a woman in tech to a woman in art, both fields where women are underrepresented. In the Netherlands, for example, there's still a 70% male representation in museums. Recognizing and addressing this disparity is part of my journey. It's about embracing the difficulties and using them as fuel for growth and creativity. This shift isn't just a career change; it's a profound personal evolution that empowers me to tackle new challenges and grow in unexpected ways. I feel like I’m connecting much more with my softer self than ever before.

#### **That also sounds a bit contradicting; you find peace in art but also face the need to fight for your place in the industry. How do you reconcile these aspects?**

You’ve touched on a key aspect of my journey. In creating art, I connect deeply with my inner child, embracing the yin qualities of creativity, innocence, and femininity. However, the business side of art requires a different approach – it's about harnessing the yang: being strong, assertive, and leveraging my tech experience. I believe it's crucial to nourish both these aspects. They represent the interplay of vulnerability and power.

#### **Facing criticism, especially on platforms like Instagram, must be challenging. How do you cope with it?**

It's tough. The criticism, often harsh and unwarranted, can be disheartening, especially when it targets work that comes from the heart. However, I’ve learned to appreciate any form of engagement, whether positive or negative. It means my work is evoking strong emotions, which is preferable to indifference. This process has taught me the importance of resilience and the strength that can be found in vulnerability. It’s a struggle, but I’m trying to be amicable to myself and the world around me. But while I generally try to be pleasant, there are times when I'm not, especially if my boundaries or values are crossed. When that happens, I don't typically react with overt anger or meanness. Instead, I become quite cold and tend to block out any kind of energy. I went on the sailing expedition on sailing ship Chateauroux with the Bouncespace community. That trip was emotionally intense, being on a boat with 20 people, sharing close quarters and limited amenities. It was a mix of freedom and constraint, a real test of personal boundaries and emotional resilience. But I didn't reach a point where I had to shut down or block out emotions. Just before the sailing trip I broke my arm, that was an additional layer of exploring freedom: physically and emotionally. Being a sailor with one arm is hard, haha. That experience was more about navigating and understanding a wide range of emotions, both mine and others' and I learned about new ways to express my emotions.

#### **It sounds like a profound journey. Do you think the trip influenced you in any way?**

Absolutely. The trip, in a way, was a lesson in emotional expression and understanding. It’s made me realize that I want to explore expressing strong emotions in my art more. Right now I’m developing more dark artwork dealing with emotions such as anger and grief. It's about finding a balance between being gentle and strong, and I'm still learning how to channel these emotions effectively in my creative work.

#### **So art is helping you in life as well?**

Art for me is a form of therapy, a powerful tool for healing. It's a way to process and overcome trauma, to digest life's intense experiences. As someone who is deeply emotional and sensitive, art provides a means to channel and work through my emotions. It's not just a career or a hobby; it's an essential part of how I navigate and understand the world and myself.

#### **You’ve taken over the torch from your father. Can you tell us more about Con Amore?**

My father, an anthroposophic general practitioner, noticed a significant gap between various healthcare disciplines in the Netherlands. General practitioners and alternative healthcare practitioners, such as acupuncturists, coaches, and massage therapist, often seemed isolated in their own “bubbles”, leading to a lack of trust and collaboration. A lot of valuable knowledge was lost.

We aim to change this by offering therapists courses on basic Medical and Psychosocial knowledge. This enables them to learn the language of mainstream healthcare and refer accurately when necessary. On the flip side, this builds trust among mainstream healthcare professionals in alternative therapists. In this way, they can work together more effectively. Our goal is for healthcare providers to not only treat symptoms but also have an understanding of the underlying causes of health problems.

#### **Sounds like you're critical of the conventional healthcare system?**

No, not at all. We are trying to establish a better connection between mainstream and alternative medicine because both approaches can complement each other. Mainstream healthcare excels in acute situations but often falls short in addressing long-term and causal approaches to health problems, simply because there is usually not enough time. Often, medication is prescribed just to treat the symptoms. A therapist can take more time to investigate underlying causes, such as persistent headaches, or pay more attention to patients with chronic pain, fatigue, or autoimmune diseases. These conditions are complex and could require a holistic approach to address the underlying issues. That's why alternative approaches and collaboration between mainstream and alternative healthcare are essential.

#### **How does Con Amore’s mission fit into your own life?**

Well, I had zero background in healthcare. Neither was I truly aware of what alternative medicine could do. I just wanted to help my father out. At that time I also managed two hospitality businesses: Duke of Tokyo, a karaoke bar in Amsterdam, and a hostel in Colombia. Both projects were a lot of fun and are still successful. However, slowly but surely, I realized that I wanted more. I was also in the process of reducing my alcohol consumption. When you have a hospitality business, your main goal is to encourage people to drink more to increase your revenue. Of course, the aim is also for them to have a good time, but your business goal is essentially revenue. I was seeking more meaning. So, I exited both projects and fully focused on Con Amore. I found that it brought much more fulfillment.

#### **Was there ever a moment when you asked yourself, "I'm deeply involved in healthcare, but I am also promoting something harmful for people at the same time, just for financial gain”?**

Hmm, perhaps unconsciously. But it was more that it coincided with my personal journey.

#### **What was your journey then?**

At a certain point, in 2017, I realized that I was stuck in certain patterns, like partying, drug use, and alcohol. I realized that I had become dependent on these things to have fun. Step by step, I began to break these habits. When I stopped drinking alcohol for a period, my mind became clearer than ever before. I started to view life in a different way. I realized that I was addicted to the hustle and bustle in the hospitality industry. Although I loved the hospitality sector and still consider it important as a place where people come together, relax, and enjoy, I realized that it was all I knew. When I started experiencing panic feelings and developed a mild anxiety disorder, I understood that I needed to make a drastic change.

#### **By then, you were already director of Con Amore for three years. Did that contribute to your decision?**

Yes, initially, I was just managing a business that happened to be in the healthcare sector. But as I met more therapists and delved into a different lifestyle, I consciously started changing my life. Mindful meditation helped me overcome my anxiety disorder. In recent years, I have explored various alternative healing methods. After an Ayahuasca session [South American plant medicine], I realized that I had achieved all the goals that I had set for myself at the age of eighteen: a house, three businesses, and marriage. But then I began to wonder, what do I really want? I had never thought about what I wanted for myself, nor who I truly was. So, here my journey of self-discovery started which eventually led me to new love and a small village in Portugal.

#### **That’s quite a transformation, from a lively hospitality entrepreneur in the city to a holistic herbal enthusiast in a little Portuguese village.**

Haha, if you see where we live, you’ll understand right away; it’s a magical environment, and I’m extremely happy I made this move. Now I have all the time and space to work on myself, which can be confronting at times. I realized that I was a people pleaser, always willing to meet others’ expectations. But the people closest to me often suffered the most. I’m now working on setting boundaries and expressing my truth without fear that people will like me less. Breathwork has helped me tremendously in this regard, maybe even more than Ayahuasca. I want to share these insights through Con Amore. Con Amore now also offers courses in breathwork, herbal medicine and next year we are starting a holistic coach programme; all in the alternative realm.

#### **You’ve mentioned that mainstream healthcare focuses on acute problems and alternative therapies address underlying issues. Does that mean everyone should always be healthy? Haven’t we entered a world where it’s never good enough?**

No honestly I think it’s the contrary; many people settle for minimal health, minimal happiness, and minimal energy because they are unaware of the possibilities. Health and happiness are strongly connected. I see so many people continue to live with certain complaints and accept that they are not functioning optimally, while there’s a lot to gain. Of course, not everyone may want or achieve that, but I wish for people that they’re aware of it so they can at least make a conscious choice.

#### **Is that what you aim to achieve with Con Amore?**

Yes, I want to expand Con Amore and offer more courses in alternative therapies, also in the rest of Europe. Sharing knowledge might be my calling. Right now, I’m still facilitating, but in the future, I see myself as a teacher in this field. But; all things in their own time. There’s no rush here in Portugal. ;)

#### **Functional strength, mobility, personal training and lifestyle coaching. You combine many disciplines in your coaching. Did you just put them all together and name it a holistic approach?**

It’s tough to label or fit what I do into a single category so I refer to it as holistic, meaning all-encompassing. This approach sees a person as a complete being—spiritually, mentally, and physically. In my training, all these elements come together. I focus on developing a complete, functional body—strength, coordination, balance—so you can be your healthiest self. In the gym culture, people often focus on aesthetics, but I look at the natural world. Animals like tigers and lions are incredibly strong and ripped without supplements. Our bodies are products of nature, and we should nourish them accordingly. Meditation and breathing exercises are integral because when you train hard, you temporarily step out of your head, letting go of everything and reconnecting with your body. This often opens the door to addressing other life questions and challenges. Intense physical training can also act as a form of meditation. For many young people, who are constantly in their heads, this is incredibly beneficial. It allows them to release their thoughts and truly feel their bodies again, a connection they might have lost.

#### **Is that something you missed when you were growing up?**

My early years definitely gave me the right tools for the work I currently do. I am now the person I wished I had around when I was younger. Back then, I didn’t feel seen or heard and often followed my own path without guidance. Without support, it’s easy to veer off course, and that happened to me. I didn’t have a role model to guide me. I left school early, spent a lot of time on the street and didn't have a positive outlook on my future. I take those experiences into my coaching now. It’s valuable work, but sometimes, it feels like I might be imposing my way as the best way. I didn’t have anyone guiding me, yet I found my path. I had many different jobs and always found different ways to make a living: from the theater and dance world, to traveling extensively and now being a trainer. I love being a coach, but I sometimes feel like the world is on the brink of collapse, especially when I see how many children need help. I notice that today it's so easy for young people to get distracted. For now, this work feels right and fulfilling, but I always follow my intuition. This doesn’t have to be forever.

#### **What makes you doubt whether this is your path? Stating that young people are more lost now, your job seems more relevant than ever.**

Of course, and it’s definitely fulfilling. But being a coach, and being bound to stay in one place, can be tough. Once, I spent half a year in Nepal and India, living in monasteries and places like Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama resides. It was incredibly freeing to do my own thing—meditating, practicing yoga, reading books, without anyone interfering.

#### **Do you miss that freedom?**

Yes, I think I do. Sometimes I miss that simplicity. The monastic life fascinated me for a long time, but I realized it’s not my path. Living in isolation is not for me; I prefer to be in the world, among people.

#### **You could have chosen an intermediate path, living among people but outside of the Netherlands. What brought you back to Eindhoven?**

After traveling, my money ran out, and my parents live in Eindhoven, so I returned here. Three years ago, I became a member at BounceSpace Eindhoven, and ever since, many good work opportunities have come along. But I’m still looking to move again. I have deams to settle in Aruba, where I have family. My mother is Dutch, and my father is from Curaçao. Aruba offers a simple, fulfilling life with nature and sunshine. The winters here are tough for me. I’m slowly looking into the possibilities of making that move happen.

#### **How do you manage to be a good coach when you struggle with the winter yourself?**

Come on, doesn't everyone struggle with the Dutch winters? Haha – It’s definitely challenging. Being a coach itself requires a lot of energy. To do one-on-one coaching is demanding. I’m also experimenting with social media by posting videos about training to inspire people on a larger scale. However, I have a love-hate relationship with social media. It can be highly manipulative, designed to keep you hooked. I notice this in myself when I mindlessly scroll. When I post, I have to be careful to avoid seeking external validation, which can easily slip in with social media. Every action I take, I want to fully stand behind it. It’s important to check your intentions and ensure they align with your values. Also with another dream I have: pursuing a career in MMA. I’ve been practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu for two years and believe I can also handle MMA. Despite being 34, I can still compete with the younger guys because I live healthily and stay fit. This path would allow me to be a role model on a larger scale, reaching more people and giving me more personal freedom. I could focus fully on what I love.

#### **MMA is quite an intense sport. Is it suitable for young people?**

Yes, it is intense, but also very safe. No one has ever died from MMA, and it promotes a healthy lifestyle. My dream is to showcase my skills on a big stage and inspire others. However, I constantly check myself to ensure I’m not driven by ego. I love expressing myself creatively and, if I can inspire others through that, it’s a win-win. Even if my actions are purely for my own fulfillment, as long as they don’t harm anyone, that’s the most genuine thing I can do.

#### **Is that what you want to teach the kids you work with, to express themselves creatively?**

I think I want to teach them how to live consciously. I believe everyone is born with passions linked to their talents. When you invest time in what you’re good at, it becomes unique and valuable. School is important, but don’t rely on it too much. Continue investing in your passions in your free time. Don’t waste time scrolling or chilling excessively. Focus on your skills and let them grow. Many young people struggle with distractions and lack of focus. I try to level with them, listen to their stories, and confront them with their actions without judgment. It’s about reprogramming their mindset and encouraging them to pursue their passions. They need to see the value in their unique skills.

#### **What are your future plans and goals for yourself and your coaching practice?**

I recently became a father, which has been life-changing. It’s no longer just about me; I have a child relying on me. This makes me think more about living in a peaceful natural environment for a better quality of life. Aruba, for example, offers a simple, fulfilling life with nature and sunshine, where everything is more relaxed and less high-paced. I want my child to be more in touch with nature. But, I always remain open to new opportunities. Sometimes things come my way that are better than I imagined. I feel a compass guiding me towards what feels right.

#### **It sounds like you really trust your intuition?**

Yes, that’s part of my holistic philosophy. I rely less on rational thinking and more on my gut feeling. I incorporate this into my coaching: follow your highest excitement, and everything will fall into place. Everyone is unique, and we all contribute to each other’s growth.

#### **Salmaan, whenever we speak, you seamlessly mix English and Dutch, which gives you this intriguing cosmopolitan air. But I heard you grew up right here in Amsterdam! Can you share some insights into your early years?**

Haha, yes! I grew up right in the bustling centre of Amsterdam, living above my father's Pakistani restaurant on Muntplein. I learned how to ride a bike in the Kalverstraat, at night when it was closed. Sounds cool, right? But growing up in that part of town was also pretty intense. My father’s restaurant was a vibrant and diverse environment but also chaotic and not the best environment for raising kids. This setting exposed me to a wide range of people and cultures, which was incredibly enriching. However, my father's ways of running a business taught me valuable lessons about entrepreneurship—specifically, how I wanted to do things differently.

#### **Did the chaos in your upbringing shape you into a more structured entrepreneur?**

Maybe, becoming a structured and organized entrepreneur is something that was more autodidactic and learned when I started my first company and foundation about fifteen years ago. What also shaped me was attending the European School in Bergen, which was a profoundly diverse environment. This school was such a cool place. From kindergarten through high school, I was surrounded by students from all over the world—children of scientists, diplomats, and entrepreneurs. This international environment fostered a deep appreciation for different cultures and perspectives. It was a melting pot of ideas and traditions, which broadened my worldview and taught me to be open-minded and adaptable in human relations and personal development. I think the diversity at school helped me develop a strong empathy and understanding for others, which has been invaluable in my personal and professional life.

#### **It sounds like building relationships has always been deeply important to you. How does that translate into your work now?**

Well, I describe myself as a “culture architect”. I help create inclusive and collaborative working environments by designing and facilitating leadership and team interventions. This involves working with teams to build trust and foster a sense of belonging, where everyone feels empowered to do their best work. My journey into this field started somewhat unexpectedly. Once, as a medical student, I wanted to change the healthcare system and dove into topics of leadership and change within the system. After starting the foundation and movement in ‘compassionate healthcare’ and running a foundation and company, I was recruited by a bespoke consultancy working on leadership journeys and impact. After six years, I took a break, after which I began receiving requests from people who needed help with organizational culture and leadership challenges. I found this work incredibly rewarding and decided to pursue it full-time. Since 2021, I've been running my own consultancy, providing services to various organizations. In addition, I also speak at events, moderate discussions, and offer masterclasses on topics like storytelling and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

#### **Do you see yourself as a team player?**

In my professional life, I see myself as a team player and a leader. My leadership style is deeply rooted in collaboration. For me, leadership is about self-management first—understanding how I handle my challenges and responsibilities before guiding others. When I'm out of sync, it's hard to be effective in helping others. Leading by example is crucial, whether in maintaining my health, communicating effectively, or handling interactions with integrity. It's not just about giving directions; it's about being a role model in every aspect of life. I believe in the power of vulnerability, as Brené Brown is known to talk about on the TED stage. Showing my team that it's okay to be human and to have struggles creates a deeper connection and builds trust.

#### **It sounds like you take a lot of responsibility, even when you're not officially working. How do you manage that?**

It can sometimes feel like a heavy responsibility, but I see it as a mindset rather than a burden. Being a good person means setting a positive example, even in small everyday actions. I've learned to be honest about how I feel and to communicate openly when something isn't right. I’m not saying that I always succeed; I mean—it’s tough. But, taking a moment to breathe and reflect helps me stay grounded and avoid being overwhelmed by the fast pace of life. I want to live my life actively, not passively, requiring conscious effort and self-awareness.

#### **Do you see this conscious attitude as a role you take on at work, or is it a mindset you maintain throughout the day, including at home with your family?**

Absolutely. My family is the cornerstone of my life. My life partner Mahsa and my daughter Indi are my greatest sources of joy and inspiration. Balancing work and family is not always easy, but it's essential for me. I want to be present for my family while also pursuing my professional goals. BounceSpace has been instrumental in this balance. It is a "third space" where I can seamlessly blend my work and personal life. My family often visits BounceSpace, and it's heartwarming to see my daughter feel at home here, asking for her favourite babyccino at the bar. Creating a space where work and family coexist harmoniously is a priority for me. Mahsa has been a tremendous support, helping me in the many different phases I have gone through since we started dating in 2011, and we've been a strong team ever since.

#### **You mentioned BounceSpace as a "third space." Can you explain what that means to you?**

A "third space" is a concept that refers to a place beyond home and work where people can come together and feel a sense of community. I know how important it is to feel a part of something. For me, BounceSpace embodies this idea perfectly. It's a place where I can work, connect with like-minded individuals, and feel a sense of belonging. My focus is to make BounceSpace the ultimate third space in the heart of Amsterdam. I want to work on increasing the diversity within the community, ensuring that people from all backgrounds feel represented and valued. It's already a wonderful place, but there's always room for growth. I'd love to see more creative and collaborative events that unite people and inspire innovation. My vision is for BounceSpace to be a hub of creativity, connection, and support—a true home away from home. But in all honesty, due to my busy work and life schedule, I haven't been able to implement all my plans as fully as I'd like. I want to make more time to really bring these ideas to life.

#### **Time must be a challenge for you with so many roles and responsibilities. What's your biggest struggle in managing them all?**

My biggest struggle is saying no. I have a hard time turning people down, when people or a good cause need help, which can lead to overcommitment and stress. I genuinely want to help everyone, but sometimes I spread myself too thin. This often results in late nights and early mornings, trying to fulfil all my obligations. I'm learning that it's okay to disappoint people sometimes and that setting boundaries is necessary for my well-being. It's a work in progress, but I'm getting better at it. Another challenge is ensuring that I'm present and attentive in all my roles—whether as a leader, a team member, a partner, or a father. It's a continuous learning and adaptation journey, but I'm excited about the possibilities ahead.

#### **Growing up in Damascus, Syria, must have been an experience filled with contrasts. How did that environment shape you?**

**Ahmad**: Damascus is a city of breathtaking beauty and chaos, a source of endless inspiration. When the revolution began during my studies in fine art, I brought human rights issues to the forefront through my music. It was challenging, pushing me to relocate to Lebanon. In Damascus, my music was political. In Beirut, I formed Aassaleek, which roughly translated means ‘the rebels’: a band that mixed satire with political commentary. Our music, which was both a form of protest and a call for freedom, resonated with many, but also painted a target on my back. The songs I wrote, especially the forbidden ones, were a direct challenge to the oppressors controlling us. Singing about freedom was a defiance against not just the regime but restrictive cultural norms as well. Being part of that band was transformative. We gained a significant following, appeared on TV, and performed bigger gigs. But our fame backfired hard. After a tour in The Netherlands, I got banned from re-entering Beirut. It was surreal. I had to go back to The Netherlands, with just my guitar and one bag. This was about ten years ago.

#### **Having faced restrictions on your music in the Middle East, how did you experience having to start all over again in the Netherlands?**

**Ahmad**: In the Netherlands, I discovered a level of freedom of expression that I couldn't have imagined in my homeland. The streets of Amsterdam, especially under the Rijksmuseum, quickly became my new stage, a daily ritual that, despite its initial challenges, was utterly exhilarating. Starting off was tough, with no connections and not a single acquaintance. Yet, the vibrant city presented a safe haven where ideas could be freely shared and explored, a stark contrast to the constraints I had known. As time passed, I began forming connections within the industry, securing more gigs and gradually carving out my own space in this new world. It didn't just enhance my music; it opened doors to other artistic forms of art, like painting and guitar making.

#### **Tell us about your journey into guitar making. What drives your passion in this craft?**

**Ahmad**: Guitar making is an extension of my artistry, where my background in fine arts and my handiness converge. It started with repairing guitars, then evolved into creating them from my own company, called Guitarrero Boutique. To me, each guitar is a unique entity with its own character. The process is deeply creative and technical, my goal is to make the perfect guitar.

#### **How does a guitar become perfect, and have you ever created one that you consider perfect?**

**Ahmad**: Crafting an instrument is both an art and a skill, imbued with the same imperfect perfection that characterizes us as humans. Consider our faces, not entirely symmetrical, yet unique and beautiful. Similarly, each handmade guitar possesses its distinct imperfections, mirroring the uniqueness of its player. The harmony between a guitar's character and the musician's personality is what approaches perfection. As for creating the perfect guitar, I believe it's an unattainable goal. I joke that I might retire the day I achieve such perfection. To me, a nearly perfect guitar is lightweight, effortless to play, responsive, and produces rich tones. Yet, perfection is elusive; there's always room for enhancement. Every guitar is a narrative of its own, shaped from wood—a material that retains its vitality. Even as an instrument, wood continues to adapt, contributing to the guitar's evolving soul. It takes a guitar about three weeks to acclimate to its new identity, transitioning from tree to musical companion. This journey from nature to craft underscores a continuous connection to life, making each guitar I've fashioned a perpetual work in progress, far from perfect but deeply resonant.

#### **Would you consider yourself a guitar maker now, or an artist?**

**Ahmad:** My life has been a blend of music, art, and activism. All these elements are deeply interconnected for me. It's about breaking free from the boxes society tries to put us in and exploring the full spectrum of human expression. In the Netherlands, I've noticed there's this tendency for people to try and fit everyone into specific boxes. It's like they have a game of categorizing people based on their profession or what they're known for. If you're an artist, that's all you are to them; you're placed in a box labeled 'artist', and it's hard to be recognized as anything beyond that. This approach, though practical, often overlooks the complexity of individual identities. It's a huge contrast to what I'm used to back home in the Middle East, where our culture embraces a more fluid understanding of identity. We value the warmth and richness of being multifaceted. Being an artist doesn't restrict you from being a musician or a craftsman; our society celebrates the blending of talents, not the segregation.

#### **Do you think creating is what we’re here for?**

**Ahmad:** Creativity, in its many forms, is what makes us human. It’s what makes us free.

#### **A lot of your work is about freedom. Do you feel free?**

**Ahmad**: Freedom is more of an illusion, an idea we're all drawn to. But when you look closer, both physically and mentally, we are bound by various constraints. In Beirut, my sense of freedom was markedly limited compared to here. Yet, even in this perceived freedom, there's a constant struggle to maintain it. Everything around us, from our phones to societal expectations, has the potential to encroach upon our freedom. My music, while centered around the theme of freedom, ironically limits me too, especially when it comes to traveling, since I can’t enter my own country anymore because of it.

#### **Do people in the Netherlands take their freedom for granted?**

**Ahmad**: I don’t know. Being born in a certain place doesn't automatically grant you freedom. It's a gradual process; there are stages to achieving it. For instance, working for oneself might seem like a form of freedom, but without financial independence, are we truly free? Over time, I've realized that freedom also means the ability to say no—to gigs, to societal norms, even to friends and family. It takes a significant amount of energy to reach a state of freedom, almost paradoxically making us unfree in the pursuit. The question of whether we're free, if we feel free, and what freedom means to us personally, is something I ponder deeply. Can you leave your phone at home and enjoy a walk in the park without feeling disconnected? Our dependency on material things, the need to always be connected, somehow binds us. So, I ask yourself: Are you free? Do you feel free? What does freedom mean to you?

#### **When I Googled your name, I saw your work in Nollywood films pop up. Can you tell me about that chapter of your career?**

**Daniella:** Oh, it was such an interesting time! From 2014 until 2017, I acted in three romantic comedies in Nigeria, including *The Wedding Party 1 & 2*, which became huge hits in Nollywood. These films explored interracial relationships and the challenges of navigating a culture that isn’t your own. Nollywood — like Bollywood — is so bold and vibrant. Being part of that energy was amazing.

At the same time, it came with some unexpected challenges. As the only white actress on set, I stood out, and with that came a lot of attention. I was sometimes asked questions or placed in situations where I felt like I was speaking for a demographic I didn’t entirely represent. It was humbling because I was there to play a character, not to serve as a spokesperson. The whole experience was such a learning curve. It made me reflect deeply on identity, representation, and the nuances of telling stories in a globalized world. I came away with a deeper understanding of my role as a creative and the importance of being intentional about the stories I want to help bring to life.

#### **You’ve had such a diverse career and life journey. How has that shaped your sense of identity?**

**Daniella:** It’s funny because, for most of my life, I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere. I grew up in Hong Kong, a place bursting with diversity, but my life there mostly took place in the expat bubble. Later, when I moved to the UK to study acting, I thought I’d really feel at home. But instead, I felt even more out of place. At university, the British students saw me as too international—I didn’t get their cultural references or humor. At the same time, the international students didn’t fully see me as one of their own because, well, I was British. I was caught in this liminal space, not fully belonging to either group. That sense of being “in-between” has been a recurring theme in my life, whether I was living in Hong Kong, the UK, or even working in Nigeria.

#### **Do you still experience that “in-between” feeling?**

**Daniella:** At times, I do. But moving to Amsterdam has changed so much for me. There’s an openness here that I hadn’t felt elsewhere. The city’s energy is magical—creative, welcoming, and full of possibility. When I first arrived, I felt at home almost instantly, which was surprising given how disconnected I’d felt in London and the UK.

My journey to Amsterdam began in London, where I met my boyfriend, Paul, who’s Dutch and from Amsterdam. He introduced me to the city during King’s Day, and I immediately fell in love with its vibrant energy. After feeling isolated in London, Amsterdam felt like the place I was meant to be. The city’s smaller size and social culture make it so much easier to build connections. I’ve also come to admire the Amsterdam no-nonsense mentality—what people here call *branie*. That boldness and unapologetic confidence have rubbed off on me in the best way.

Of course, I still face challenges, like the language barrier. It’s a reminder that I’m not a native here. But instead of feeling like I don’t belong, I’ve started to see Amsterdam as a place where I can simply be myself. It’s also where we’ve built a family. Raising my daughter Freya here has given me a deeper sense of belonging, and I love that she’s growing up in a city that celebrates creativity, independence, and community.

#### **How did becoming a mother influence you?**

**Daniella:** Motherhood has changed me in ways I didn't expect. I'm the eldest of five, so I thought I'd slip into it naturally. But in truth, there were so many moments when I just thought "I'm not cut out for this." Motherhood is wild. It raises a magnifying glass to your inner self, and forces you to face it.

There were challenging moments — many nights with no sleep, feeling like I wasn't enough — but in the five years I have now been a mum, I'm learning to let go of perfection. I focus now on being present, showing her resilience and compassion, and teaching her (and myself) that it's ok to make mistakes.

#### **You mentioned challenges in forging a career in the creative industry. How’s that now you’re in Amsterdam?**

**Daniella:** The creative industry is tough, especially when you add motherhood into the mix. When I first moved to Amsterdam, I thought I’d have to leave acting behind. The industry here felt smaller and harder to break into, and I wasn’t sure where I fit. I started focusing more on voiceover work, copywriting, and teaching drama to kids. But deep down, I missed the thrill of creating and performing.

During that time, I realized I couldn’t wait for opportunities—I had to create them. That’s how my passion project, *Tiny Theatre - Monologues Live!*, came to life. It’s a platform where writers and actors collaborate on performances of five-minute monologues. It’s a low-pressure, creative environment where people can experiment and connect, and it’s been a lifeline for me. It reminded me why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place: the power of collaboration and the magic of seeing an idea come to life.

#### **What are you passionate about now?**

**Daniella:** Right now, I’m focusing on things that bring me joy and purpose. *Tiny Theatre* is a big part of that—it allows me to connect with other creatives and bring untold stories to life. Writing is still a huge part of my life and I’ve been exploring podcasts because I love how intimate and dynamic storytelling can be in that format.

Movement has also become a cornerstone for me. I’m a yoga teacher and currently training to teach Pilates, which has been transformative for my mental and physical health. It's crazy how much stress and emotion we store in our bodies, and how practices like yoga and pilates can start to release that.

It's a journey, but I'm learning that vulnerability is where strength grows. For years, I thought strength was about powering through and doing it all perfectly. But now I see it’s about admitting when I’m struggling, asking for help, and showing up authentically. Whether it’s on a yoga mat, in my creative work, or as a mother, I’ve found so much power in simply being real.

#### **Samuel, if someone asked you at a party, “So, what do you do?”—what’s your go-to answer?**

**Samuel:** (Laughs) I usually say, “Oh, I’m just figuring things out.” It’s true, in a way, because what I do isn’t easy to summarize. If I had to give a proper answer, though, I’d say I create spaces—physical, digital, and emotional—where transformation happens. At the core, I’m about helping people release the tension between where they are now and their authentic Self. Whether it’s through psychedelics, community, or technology, everything I do revolves around connection and transformation.

#### **Tell us about those projects. What are you working on right now?**

**Samuel:** My work centers around three main ventures. First, there’s FOLD Experiences, the retreats I organize with two amazing partners. These retreats are all about creating resonance—helping people reconnect with themselves, with others, and with the world around them. I think we’ve lost that in today’s society: true connection. At our retreats, we encourage participants to move inwards while interacting with nature and finding vulnerability around the fire. A psychedelic experience is one of various tools we use to facilitate that.

Then there’s Afterglow, a digital therapeutics platform we’ve developed in a small team of experts in clinical psychology and coaching . The idea is to take the transformative power of therapeutic tools and scale them through software. We’re building something that helps people reflect, develop, and connect on a larger scale.

Finally, I’m setting up a Microdosing Association with a team of very experienced and important players in the space, of which I’m honored to be the chair. The popularity of microdosing is increasing steeply and our goal is to self-regulate the space and ensure quality and safety for everyone involved.

#### **Psychedelics seem to be a recurring theme in your work. Is that intentional?**

**Samuel:** I wouldn’t say psychedelics are the focus. Having said that, they are a powerful tool for transformation. Transformation is really at the heart of what I do. My vision isn’t that psychedelics are the only way to achieve this—it’s just one of the instruments I’m passionate about because of the potential I’ve seen in my own life and in others’.

There’s also something thrilling about working in a field that’s controversial. Psychedelics are innovative and deeply impactful, but there’s still a lot of skepticism. I like being on the edge of something new and showing people the value in it. Perhaps it’s my personality—I’m allergic to sameness and I always look for authenticity, both in myself and my surroundings.

#### **Where does that drive for authenticity come from?**

**Samuel:** It’s definitely rooted in my past. Growing up, I had a lot of energy but no idea how to channel it. I rebelled in school—picking fights, skipping class, and acting out in ways that, looking back, were cries for connection. By my mid-twenties, it all caught up with me. I was doing everything I thought was expected of me: working full-time as a consultant, finishing my master’s degree, and keeping up with a busy social life. From the outside, I seemed to have it all together.

But my body had other plans. I developed chronic hyperventilation—constantly feeling like I couldn’t breathe—and it forced me to stop. Suddenly, I had to confront the fact that I had no idea who I was beyond those external expectations. My identity was built around meeting others’ expectations, not around what truly resonated with me.

That breakdown was a wake-up call. It forced me to stop, to start over, and to figure out what I really wanted—not for anyone else, but for myself. I had to look at myself with vulnerability, which was something I had never learned to do. That process made me realize how much I had been longing for authentic connections, both with myself and with others.

#### **Vulnerability isn’t something that’s widely encouraged—especially for men, right?**

**Samuel:** Exactly. Culturally, we don’t teach boys how to be vulnerable or to explore their emotions. Instead, we tell them to suppress their feelings and “man up.” That has long-term consequences. Those boys grow into men who have no idea how to process what they’re feeling, which often shows up as aggression, detachment, or even complete shutdowns.

I know that experience firsthand. Growing up, the only tool I had to deal with emotions was anger—rebelling, lashing out.. It wasn’t healthy, but it was one of the few ways I knew how to express myself. And I think a lot of men feel that same frustration: they don’t know how to express what’s inside them, leaving them feeling disconnected and stuck.

If we want healthier individuals, and by extension a healthier society, we have to change that. Boys need to be taught that it’s okay to feel, to cry, to show vulnerability. Emotional development isn’t a “girl thing”; it’s a human thing. And when we create space for that, we build stronger, more authentic connections—not just for men, but for everyone.

#### **How did you navigate that turning point in your life?**

**Samuel:** It wasn’t easy. I had to dig deep into my past—into my relationship with my parents, my unresolved emotions, and my lack of tools to process what I was feeling. I started therapy, explored spirituality, and learned how to connect with myself on an emotional level. It was a gradual process, but it taught me something fundamental: fulfillment doesn’t come from external achievements. It comes from alignment with who you are at your core. That’s what drives me now. I know what it feels like to be stuck, and I want to help others find a way out.

#### **Some people criticize practices like ‘inner work,’ calling them hyper-individualistic. How do you respond to that?**

**Samuel:** I understand that perspective, but I see it differently. True inner work isn’t just about the individual—it has a ripple effect that extends far beyond the self. Today’s younger generations often carry a deep inward focus, one that sometimes risks veering into narcissism when the attention remains solely inward. Authenticity is not just about knowing yourself; it’s about being attuned to the world around you—your community, your relationships, and the collective energy we all share. When people align with their true selves in a way that is also outwardly sensitive, they make choices that uplift not only their own lives but also those of others. Healing takes on a higher dimension at the level of the organism of the community. It’s in this space—through connection, vulnerability, and shared growth—that true transformation happens, creating harmony not just for the individual but for the collective whole.

Fulfillment, for me, isn’t about fleeting happiness or even just mental health. It’s about connection—being in tune with your purpose and living authentically. When individuals experience that, it fosters stronger, more meaningful bonds with others. Whether it’s through retreats, technology, or creating supportive communities, my goal is to enable that transformation in a way that benefits everyone.

#### **Michal, let’s start with the most obvious question. Where are you right now?**

Right now, I’m in a small village called Leysin, in the French part of Switzerland. It’s this beautiful place surrounded by the Alps, where I’m staying for a month to work on a book about semi-nomadism. The funny thing is, I’m living this semi-nomadic life while writing about it, which adds a whole new layer to the experience. The views are breathtaking, and the vibe is incredibly serene. It’s the perfect backdrop for our project, which brings together 13 people living here for a month, working on the book for about three hours a day, and playing cards as part of the writing methodology.

#### **Cards? That sounds unusual. How does that tie into writing a book?**

Yeah, it’s definitely a bit unconventional! The cards are part of this rapid prototyping method we use. For three hours a day, we come together to "play cards" and write. It puts everyone into a flow state where creativity comes naturally, and it really speeds up the whole process. It’s fun, playful, and productive—a perfect mix. We also take time for hikes and activities in between, so it feels like a co-living experiment as much as it does a writing retreat. The book will be done in a month, from idea to print, which is pretty amazing considering we started with no prep.

#### **The book focuses on semi-nomadism, a lifestyle you're deeply invested in. Can you explain what it means and why it resonates with you?**

Semi-nomadism is a response to the classic digital nomad life. You know, a lot of people love the idea of constant travel, working from anywhere in the world, but there’s this growing realization that we also need roots—somewhere to return to. It’s not about being stuck in one place, but it’s about having multiple homes, spaces where you feel a sense of belonging. It can be challenging—balancing the freedom of movement with the desire for community—but it’s also incredibly fulfilling. I’ve been through phases of pure nomadism, traveling without a home base, and it was exciting, but eventually, I found that I wanted something more stable. Now, I’m in this space where I have a home in Portugal, but I still move around, creating meaningful connections wherever I go. It’s like having the best of both worlds—travel and belonging.

#### **Most people still live more traditional lives, tied to one home and routine—jobs, families, and stability. Why do you think some people want to live a more nomadic lifestyle?**

Do you think so? I thought nomadism was quite common these days, but maybe that's just my bubble—haha. The shared characteristic of the people that I come across is a desire to explore, to see what’s beyond the norm. It’s not just about physical travel—it’s a mindset. People who are open to questioning the default path, whether it’s how they live, where they work, or who they connect with, are often the ones who resonate with semi-nomadism. But I also recognize that there’s a barrier to entry. As a European with an EU passport, it’s incredibly easy for me to travel, but that’s not the case for everyone. So yes, there’s a certain privilege involved in this lifestyle, but I think at the core of it, it’s about the mindset more than anything else. It’s about curiosity and the courage to build a life that fits you, not the other way around.

#### **What do you hope to achieve or experience through your semi-nomadic lifestyle?**

Well, my big quest for 2025 is about finding the right people, not the right place. I’ve learned that it’s not so much about where you are, but who you’re with. My goal now is to find a group of people to build something long-lasting—a base, maybe multiple homes—but the key is the community. I’ve studied and practiced community-building for years, and the conclusion I’ve come to is that it all starts with relationships. The magic happens when you bring people together to create something, whether it’s a book, a piece of art, or a business. The collaboration process reveals so much about how people work together, and it’s the best way to see if you’re aligned. So for me, the next big step is finding those core collaborators, people with shared values but different perspectives, and figuring out how we can build something sustainable together. It’s like a puzzle where everyone brings their own piece, and together we create something much bigger.

#### **What makes you wake up excited every morning?**

There’s this one thing that really excites me—it’s creating agency. It’s not just about soaking in inspiration; it’s about knowing that you can actually *do* something with it. I believe everyone has the capacity to live a life that fits them, and helping people realize that is what drives me. It’s incredibly powerful to see someone wake up to the fact that they can create, that they’re capable of shaping their life in meaningful ways. It’s not easy—there are challenges, but there’s also immense satisfaction in breaking out of patterns. We all live by certain scripts, and while some of them are fine, others are outdated or limiting. Helping people break those patterns and create new ones, that’s where the real value lies.

#### **You refer to yourself as a catalyst and a wizard. Can you tell me more about what those terms mean to you?**

The word “catalyst” comes from the idea of being an agent of change. In chemistry, a catalyst speeds up a reaction, and I think that’s what I wish to do in life as well. I help create environments where change happens faster—whether it’s within a team or a community. But the “wizard” part is a bit different. It actually came from a friend who started calling me a wizard, and eventually, everyone else followed. I embraced it because it felt fitting; there’s a magical element to the work I do—facilitating projects and creating spaces where things just come together in unexpected ways. It’s like, "How is this even happening?" But it does, because you put in the energy and intention to make it work. That’s the magic. It’s also where the performative side comes in; a lot of what I do involves bringing people together creatively, often for longer periods. I love it when the group reaches a point where they start self-facilitating—that’s when I know real change is happening. When people feel empowered enough to take the lead themselves, that’s where the magic truly unfolds.

#### **You also mentioned a sailing trip with BounceSpace. What was that about?**

Ah, yes! That was a fantastic experience. It started when Jorn suggested a sailing trip, and I thought, “Why not?” We took the concept of Burning Man—where you have to build something, put your energy into it—and applied it to the sailing ship Chateauroux. We had a group of burners and Bouncies come together to work on the boat, cleaning it up, fixing it, and really making it our own. It was a win-win-win: the ship got some much-needed care, we reduced costs by doing the labor ourselves, and we built this amazing sense of community in the process. It was gold. We even created an artifact at the end, a logbook that everyone contributed to. I’d love to do that more often—it’s such a powerful way to connect and create something tangible together.

#### **Ophélie, I love the origin of your name—it means "to help and to save", right? Does that say something about you?**

It's funny you mention that because when I was younger, I used to think it was my job to save everyone. I felt like I had to be a sort of "savior," as a kid I used to give my toys to kids in the park, my dad thought I’d become a nun—haha. But I’ve realized over time that it’s not healthy to carry that expectation. Nowadays, I focus more on nurturing people and offering care in a more grounded way. My way of helping is simply asking, "How can I help you?" rather than projecting what I think they need. Sometimes it’s about listening, sometimes it's helping with practical things—like moving house—and sometimes it's supporting a team in my professional work. The key is to really listen, not just jump in with what you think is best.

#### **Is that a mindset that came naturally to you? Or was it something you had to learn over time?**

Definitely not naturally no, haha. I come from a family full of loud, conflicting personalities. Growing up, I was much more reactive—warm-blooded, you could say. There was a lot of shouting, a lot of big emotions. It wasn’t until I started doing facilitation work and group training that I learned how to relate to people in a more constructive way. It was almost like therapy for me. I learned how to better respect the boundaries between what’s mine and what’s theirs, and how to build meaningful connections without losing myself in the process.

#### **You mentioned facilitation work. How did you get into that field?**

When I moved to the Netherlands, I sought out opportunities to contribute to society. I volunteered with Forward Incubator, which helps refugees start businesses here. That experience was transformative for me because it wasn’t just about giving advice—it was about empowering others to reclaim agency over their journey. I was quite young, only 24, and initially thought, "Who is going to listen to me?" But half of the entrepreneurs wanted to work with me! That taught me that helping isn’t about your age or expertise—it’s about presence, empathy, and being willing to support others in ways that matter to them.

#### **Now you have your own initiative, Table 7. What inspired you to start it?**

Well, I wanted to create something in Amsterdam that brings people together, particularly in a city where it’s easy to feel disconnected. Table 7 started because I missed the sense of gathering around a table, like we used to do in France. I wanted to bring strangers from the same neighborhood together—not to network, but to connect on a human level. We set the table creatively, we share stories, and we even do fun things like tarot readings. One time, a Dutch granny was hilariously venting about her best friend, and it was such a beautiful moment of vulnerability and humor. It's really about breaking through social and economic bubbles and just being with each other. We live next to each other, but how often do we truly see one another?

#### **It seems like a lot of your work is about fighting against disconnection. Is that something you’re personally passionate about?**

Absolutely. I think a lot of the disconnection we feel in society comes from this polarization—whether it’s political or cultural. And I’ve felt that disconnection myself, from my family or from not quite fitting into the environments I grew up in. I’ve always been drawn to people who are on the outside, like myself. When I was younger, I’d hang out with the misfits at school—people who didn’t fit into the mainstream, and I felt that pull towards repairing those broken connections. It’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my life, and why I focus so much on creating spaces for connection now. I also work with Mischief Makers, an agency I’ve been working with for the past few years, and honestly, they’ve become like family to me. We’re all freelancers, but we collaborate on different projects together. It’s such a supportive group, which is great because freelancing can sometimes feel a bit lonely. But with them, it’s not just about work—these are my close friends. We share the same values and have so much fun working together, which makes the experience so much more rewarding.

#### **With all these projects, from Table 7 to your work with Mischief Makers, where do you want to go next?**

I feel really good about where I am now. Turning 30 this year was a moment of clarity for me. I’ve gone through a lot of personal growth in the past few years—stepping out of heteronormativity, navigating ADHD, going through a breakup, brutally losing a life long friend—and now I feel more aligned with who I am. I’m excited to explore more social design work and to focus on creating new narratives around connection. My next move is actually starting a podcast around these themes—how we can create a culture of connection in a world that sometimes feels so divided. I’ve started sharing my words over storytelling events and the magic of shared stories and intimacy in conversations is what’s bringing me to my next move.

#### **That sounds amazing! I’m curious, though—where does your drive for connection come from? Is there an element of loneliness you’re trying to resolve?**

(laughs) I was waiting for that question! Yes, I think a lot of my drive does come from a place of loneliness. I’ve experienced feeling disconnected from my family, from society, and even from myself at times. But I’ve worked hard to build a community around me—people who I love and who love me back. That’s been so healing for me. My current roommate, for example, has taught me so much about what it means to be a good friend. And that’s really what I want for others—to feel connected and supported.

#### **Finally, I’ve heard you wanted to be a pirate when you were young. Did that dream ever go away?**

O: (laughs) Not really! I’ve always had this rebellious energy, and I loved the idea of sailing the open seas, and living by my own rules. That spirit definitely stayed with me. In fact, two years ago, I went on a sailing trip organized by BounceSpace, and it was like living out that childhood dream. I didn’t know anyone on the trip, but by the end, I had made some lifelong friends. It’s funny how those things come full circle. Even as adults, we can still live out the dreams we had as kids in some way.

#### **I’ve read that you are a ‘Somatic Therapist, certified in NeoReichan Body, Breathwork and Emotional Release’. That’s a mouthful. How did you find your way to this type of therapy?**

My journey began out of necessity. When I was 20, I started to feel some pain in my body. I was stuck; all my joints were very painful, and I couldn't move. It felt like a knife against my skin. It was a confusing time; I was eventually diagnosed with a mixed tissue connective disease, a condition with elements of fibromyalgia and rheumatism. The medications offered were just painkillers, not a cure. But I was just 20 – I didn’t want to live my life dependent on these medications, so I began exploring alternative ways to manage my condition.

#### **That sounds like a challenging time. How did you manage to find a path that worked for you?**

It was a long process, filled with experimentation and learning. I delved into different diets, focusing on anti-inflammatory foods, and tried various therapies. Doctors in the alternative realm told me to listen to my body more, but I had no idea how. No one ever taught me how to listen to my body. It’s not a very natural thing for us to do in our society. So I was looking at ways to learn and connect with my body, and I found that in Neo-Reichian Body Breathwork. It wasn’t until I started with this that I finally found significant relief. This approach, which integrates body awareness and emotional release, allowed me to connect deeply with my body and understand its messages. It was a transformative experience, and I knew I wanted to share this with others.

#### **Can you describe how Neo-Reichian Body Breathwork works and how it helped you personally?**

Neo-Reikian Body Breathwork involves techniques that enhance body awareness and emotional release. It includes energetic techniques, breathing exercises, and body movements to help discharge and recharge energy. In this technique, you need to open your eyes and express yourself. It’s about being brave enough to feel and be vulnerable, which allows for true healing. For me, it was about more than just managing pain; it was about understanding and releasing the deep-seated emotions stored in my body. This practice taught me to communicate with my body and heal from within. It's very interesting because I'm not free of pain. Sometimes it comes back a little bit, but it's a reminder to be more connected with my body. It's really a new way to communicate with myself and understand the roots of what I am feeling.

#### **What inspired you to start teaching others?**

After experiencing such profound personal healing, I felt a strong desire to share this knowledge. I believe that many people live disconnected from their bodies, much like I was. When I finished my studies in Chile and started to work, I was disappointed with the work environment. I decided to travel to Europe. My boyfriend and I moved to the Netherlands, where I also have family. I began looking for communities that valued holistic health and mindfulness. I found a center in Italy, where I volunteered. I met my teacher there, and he taught me everything about this therapy, which really changed my life. Right now, I’m asked to assist him in training new groups, which is such an honor. I want to be able to spread this type of therapy because I think so many people will benefit from it. I believe that our bodies hold incredible wisdom and healing potential. By creating a safe space for body awareness and emotional expression, we can unlock this potential and live more balanced, fulfilling lives.

#### **Why do you think we are disconnected from our bodies?**

In our society, we often live in our heads, focused on mental tasks and achievements. This disconnection from our bodies can lead to various health issues and emotional imbalances. Our educational system emphasizes sitting still and processing information mentally, often neglecting physical and emotional aspects. Even sports and physical training often focus on performance and results rather than body awareness and connection. By creating a safe space for body awareness and emotional expression, I hope to guide people towards a more holistic and balanced way of living.

#### **Do you think you have healing powers?**

No, I don't have healing powers. The NeoReichan approach is different from Reiki, which is a more commonly known practice. My role as a therapist is to facilitate the process by creating a safe space and providing the tools. But the people do their own work. They need to be brave enough to open their eyes, express themselves, and face their emotions. It's a journey they must undertake themselves, and I am there to support and encourage them along the way. You heal yourself. You need to be aware and change it. If you don't want to, if you are not brave enough to do it, you don’t do it. In the beginning, when I started with this therapy myself, I felt lost and overwhelmed. There were moments I wanted to give up, but I realized that feeling lost can be a good thing because it forces you to reflect and consider changes in your life. Crises are part of our growth. Sometimes I’m thankful for my chronic illness because it pushed me to find new ways to live and connect with my body. It gave me more introspection about my purpose and myself.

#### **What are your future plans in this field?**

I envision hosting retreats where people can disconnect from their daily lives and immerse themselves in nature and body awareness practices. These retreats would provide a deeper, more intensive experience, allowing participants to reflect on their lives and make meaningful changes. I also plan to continue my training and eventually teach new practitioners, expanding the reach of this therapeutic work.

#### **When people go to a retreat, they experience a different way of living for a week. We all brush our teeth twice a day out of habit, but maintaining new habits like meditating is tough. How can people stick to these new practices when they return to their normal lives?**

To bring these practices into your life, you need to have an active routine. It's about being creative and finding ways to incorporate body awareness into your daily schedule. Maintaining these habits can be challenging with the responsibilities of modern life, but I believe it’s essential for holistic well-being. You need to find what works for you and make it a priority.

#### **Once you’ve seen your work on the streets of Amsterdam, it’s hard to miss it – haha. What was the inspiration behind Vanillacooldance?**

Well, thank you – haha. Vanillacooldance started as my personal doodle diary during a challenging time in my life. I was unemployed and heartbroken, living in a small flat in Amsterdam. To cope with my situation, I decided to draw every day for a year, turning my cringy and embarrassing moments into humorous and empowering stories. At some point I wanted to bring my art to the world so I started to display some of my doodles outside of my apartment. One of the most notorious cartoons was a street art piece I created for King’s Day. It featured an illustration of a king going down on a queen with the message, “A true king knows who comes first,” and a sash that said, “Close the orgasm gap.” I printed out life-sized cutouts and posted them all over Amsterdam. It was provocative and sparked a lot of conversations. That’s when I knew Vanillacooldance had the power to make an important difference. It became my life’s purpose.

#### **How do you think an illustration like that will help to close the orgasm gap?**

I mean – no guy is going to walk past that with his girlfriend and not take the hint. I had people messaging me saying things like, “Everyone needs this poster outside their house. It was up for six months outside mine, and every time before I brought a guy home, I would point to it and honestly: I’ve never had more orgasms or pleasure in my life.” Isn’t it beautiful how a cartoon can open up conversations around female pleasure?

#### **Your work often addresses taboo topics. What do you think about society’s relationship with taboos?**

I think we still live in a culture where people don’t know how to talk about things that embarrass them. There’s a lot of silence around these topics, which breeds even more shame. It’s like a vicious cycle. By not communicating about our shared embarrassments, they grow bigger in our heads. That’s why it’s so important to break these taboos and have open conversations. It helps us realize that we’re not alone and that our feelings and experiences are valid.

#### **Did you experience that yourself, being embarrassed?**

Growing up, I was very insecure. I had a lazy eye and was often picked on, which made me do everything I could to fit in. Later, I worked in advertising in New York, and although I enjoyed parts of it, like traveling and working with great people, I often felt like I was just trying to fit into a mold. Moving to Amsterdam and being unemployed for a year and a half was tough, but it was also a time of self-discovery. Backpacking in Southeast Asia and experiencing different cultures helped me realize there’s more to life than just following a set path. It was liberating to step off the treadmill of American life and explore my own path. I started to like myself more and more. Now I want to live my life shamelessly and share that with the world through Vanillacooldance.

#### **How did you choose the word “shameless” for your mission?**

I was working on a newsletter for Vanillacooldance and trying to find a theme that encapsulated all my work. I wanted something catchy and powerful. “Shameless” just clicked because it has this rebellious energy. It’s like saying, “fuck you” to anyone who tries to impose their projections on you. It’s about reclaiming power and refusing to be silenced. I believe we are all born without shame, full of vibrancy, creativity, and energy. Living shamelessly is about breaking the taboos that hold us back and realizing that we are all normal.

#### **Living shamelessly is a bold statement. How do you embody this in your own life?**

Hmmm – that’s a good question. For me, living shamelessly means showing up authentically and vulnerably. It’s about being confident in who I am and the choices I make, whether that’s in my relationships, my career, or my personal life. It’s also about being able to talk candidly about my insecurities and not being afraid of others’ reactions. I strive to be the author of my own life, carving out the path I want to live, and not just being a bystander. It’s not always easy, and I still have moments of doubt and fear, but I remind myself that my journey is my own, and I’m proud of it.

#### **Has VanillaCoolDance always been about empowerment?**

When I first started Vanillacooldance, my art was more focused on self-deprecating humor. As I grew more comfortable with myself and my voice, my art began to evolve. I started to explore topics like female sexuality, relationships, and personal empowerment more deeply. My cartoons have become more anthemic and empowering. They encourage people to embrace their sexuality and vocalize their needs. This evolution reflects my own journey of self-discovery and empowerment, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see how my work resonates with others.

#### **And how is that going so far?**

The community aspect of Vanillacooldance has been incredibly rewarding. I receive messages from people who say that my cartoons have helped them start important conversations or see themselves in a new light. Some even refer to it as "VCD energy" – a term that describes the empowerment and confidence they feel from engaging with my work. It’s amazing to see how my art can have such a positive impact on others' lives. I want anyone who engages with my work to feel empowered and confident, knowing they’re not alone and that their feelings and experiences are valid. Creating a community where people can have open conversations and support each other is incredibly important to me. The messages I get from people saying how my cartoons have helped them talk to their partners or reflect on their own behavior mean the world to me. That’s the kind of impact I hope to continue making.

#### **Do you face challenges with social media censorship, particularly regarding content about female sexuality?**

Yes, definitely. Social media platforms like Instagram often censor content about female sexuality, which is incredibly frustrating. I’ve had to deal with shadow bans and content removals, even though I’m just trying to have open and honest conversations about important topics. This double standard is why I’m moving some of my content to [Substack](Vanillacooldance.substack.com), where I can share longer-form content without the same level of censorship. It’s important for me to create a space where these conversations can happen freely.

#### **What are your plans for the future with Vanillacooldance?**

I want to continue creating a safe space for shameless conversations. My goal is to empower people to explore themselves, vocalize their needs, and feel confident in who they are. I’m excited about expanding my platform, and come together offline more frequently. I want Vanillacooldance to be a place where people feel inspired and connected, whether they’re curious about their sexuality, relationships, or just carving their own path in life.

> A boat is seen as a symbol of unbridled freedom, but it can ironically be one of the most unfree places.

**So, you identify as "pirates." Is that just a catchy title, or is it a mantle you wear with pride?**

**RAISSA**: For us, adopting the term "pirates" is more than just a quirky name. It speaks volumes about our beliefs, our ethos. 'Piratas do Amor,' which means 'Pirates of Love' in Portuguese, truly resonates with our spirit. During the golden age of piracy in the late 16th century, pirates represented freedom amidst an oppressive world. Despite their notorious reputation, they were pioneers of certain progressive ideas – equality, democracy, and even a form of social security. The narrative about them has been largely shaped by those in power, but pirates were more than just rogues. They were strategic, with a community-driven approach that emphasized equality and unity. Their spirit of rebellion, their artistic expressions and the way they lived in a horizontal social community is what inspired us in shaping our culture of beliefs for Pirates do Amor.

#### **What is that culture of beliefs?**

**RAISSA**: Our core belief with Pirates do Amor is to usher in a culture where love and freedom reign supreme. I think this world is dominated by fear - from global conflicts to personal struggles - and that's what we aim to challenge. With our transformative sailing voyages, we create an environment where love can be the core guiding principle, replacing that fear. We regard our sailboats as microcosms where participants learn about themselves and interpersonal dynamics.

**CHRISTOF**: A boat is seen as a symbol of unbridled freedom, but it can ironically be one of the most unfree places. The constraints of being on a boat - limited resources and space, no escape from conflicts, and the ever-present natural elements - force one to communicate, respect, and harmonize with both nature and fellow voyagers. This encapsulates our vision of a world where people live in harmony with nature and each other. With nature as our teacher, the ocean tests our resolve and teaches us to let go of the illusion of control. In this setting, love is not just an emotion but a commitment to understanding, acceptance, and living in the present. With our voyages we want to deliver more than just adventures; we try to foster a culture that emphasizes love over fear.

#### **But love can also be scary sometimes, how does that play out between the two of you?**

**CHRISTOF**: The idea that there's a finite amount of affection one can give or receive is a fear we challenge daily. By recognizing love as an abundant force, we allow ourselves to connect more deeply with one another and the world around us. Raissa is my wife, but she can love other people. And that will only increase my love for her and our love with everybody. Transparent communication stands at the core of our relationship, enabling us to express vulnerabilities, desires, and fears. For us, love isn’t just about the bond between two individuals; it’s also about self-love and understanding oneself. Fear, often seen as a negative emotion, is a primal instinct . In the vastness of the ocean, this fear is strongly felt. But instead of giving in, we harness it, transitioning from fear to love through courage. In Portuguese, "coração" means heart and "agir" is to act. Courage, thus, becomes an act of the heart. This courage allows us to confront societal norms. Despite the stigmas and fears surrounding open relationships, we've chosen this path and face its challenges through open dialogue. Through open-heartedness, we aim to build a culture of love that extends beyond just the two of us, creating ripple effects in every space we inhabit. Courage is the bridge between fear and love

**RAíSSA**: For us, an open relationship is about keeping love free. Formats, from monogamy to polyamory, can be restricting. I want love to flow without barriers, knowing love is abundant. Right now, our agreements say that our relationship is the primary one, since we are building a dream together that requires a lot of commitment. Everyone that we feel love for, and that are aligned with our values, are more than welcome in our hearts. Love is a choice and we want to choose love everyday of our lives, while working on our dream.

#### **Where did that dream start?**

**CHRISTOF:** The inception of our shared dream goes back nearly a decade ago when we met in Brazil, both participating in a program called Warriors Without Weapons. On the second day, I caught Raissa's gaze as she readjusted her quirky round glasses. The spark in her eyes spoke volumes; it was a defining moment. I knew right away that she was special to me. The love we share grew from that day.

**RAíSSA**: We knew it right away. It was just a very strong feeling that we wanted to be together, that we have a mission together. But it wasn’t an easy start. Navigating the challenges of a four-year long-distance relationship, followed by a close-knit life on a boat for another four years, tested our bond. Living on a mere five square meters together was intense. Now, after a decade of togetherness, with nine years as a married couple, our journey has taught us that our connection goes beyond a romantic partnership. Beyond love, our bond has several layers: working together, dreaming together, and constantly learning. We are supporting each other in our own journey of self discovery and healing. For us, our relationship is also a catalyst of our spiritual paths. We've always viewed our talents as complementary, creating a harmonious balance between our energies. Our relationship is the primary laboratory for the principles and practices we share with others on our sailing trips.

#### **Living, working, and loving together is intense. How do you keep from getting on each other's nerves?**

**RAíSSA**: Undoubtedly, we do have our moments of frustration. We spend a lot of time together, but we are trying to integrate a way in which we both have our own projects, chasing our individual passions, sometimes spending time apart. Even in daily routines on the boat; sometimes we sleep in separate rooms, just to give each other personal space. This lets us enjoy our individual morning rituals without adjusting for the other's preferences. We've set a guideline: no communication before 9 AM.

#### **Your values seem remarkably aligned, but Brazil and Liechtenstein are worlds apart. You can’t tell that doesn’t cause any friction between you two?**

**BOTH:** TIME MANAGEMENT (laughing)

**RAíSSA**: My Brazilian nature sees time as fluid, flexible. It allows for spontaneity and going with the flow.

**CHRISTOF**: And on my end, coming from a Swiss-influenced mindset, punctuality is crucial for me. Even today we had a little fight because I was in my efficient mode.

**RAíSSA**: Yes, sometimes I perceive his efficiency as being too stern. It's challenging, but it also makes me reflect on my own reactions. We try to use it so it pertains to growth, we teach and learn from one another.

**CHRISTOF**: Our cultural differences are strong: the structured versus the spontaneous, the minute versus the expansive, the orderly versus the chaotic.

**RAISSA**: But isn't that the essence of life? The blend of contrasts makes it rich and exciting. A monotone is just not us. We even imagined creating our own country once, "LIBRA", representing the combination of our worlds that would be perfect – a bit of chaos with a touch of organization, some passionate Brazilian rhythms with moments of calm. It's about cherishing these differences while navigating our journey together.

#### **In your recent sailing journey, you collaborated with Bouncespace. What does a typical week look like when you're on a sailing experience and what were some standout experiences or activities?**

**RRAíSSA**: A typical week starts with introducing the boat's core values. These values, like participation, self-expression, self-responsibility, presence, and regeneration, underpin all our activities. Regeneration, for instance, emphasizes improving whatever we engage with, whether that's our surroundings, relationships, or ourselves. From simple acts like picking up trash on the beach to taking time for self-care, it’s ingrained in our routine.

**CHRISTOF**: Understanding these values is crucial. Think of it as our own "Pirate Code" for the boat, reminiscent of Burning Man's Ten Principles. Our day might include community tasks, like shared meals, where we often introduce fun, playful elements. I recall during one dinner, we hid tasks under plates, turning the meal into a spontaneous game. Another memorable moment was the dry falling experience during sunrise, combining meditation, yoga, ecstatic dance, and more, culminating in a beautiful morning party.

**RAíSSA**: Beautiful in the sense that it’s extraordinary. Because it's so rare and so genuine. That morning party happened spontaneously. We encourage everyone to bring their unique flavor to our activities, turning ordinary chores into delightful performances. We've had participants dress up as Freddie Mercury for cleaning or engage in improv theater at the beach. This co-creation allows everyone to explore, play, and practice new things.

**CHRISTOF**: Indeed. These sailing trips aren't just about following a set itinerary. It's about co-creating experiences, playing with boundaries, and fostering deep, genuine connections. We create a space where everyone feels empowered, expressive, and part of a larger purpose. Right now we organize the sailing trips on other people’s boats, but we hope to buy a big ship soon and sail the world amongst many other Pirates. We want it. We know it will happen. But we’re not going to rush it; when you force things, they don't flow.

#### **Adding a little Brazilian flowiness to the Swiss clockwork, I see!**

**RAíSSA:** He's got the precision of a Swiss watch, but now with a samba beat!

#### **Your clothing style captures my attention every time I see you, how do you do it?**

Haha, well thank you. ​I find it visually appealing to add elements that create a contrasting effect. Like wearing a suit combined with a metal shirt. I'm drawn to combinations that catch people off guard. I think I’m always driven by a sense of unconventionality, it’s perhaps even an unconscious urge of mine. I enjoy presenting people with something unexpected, something outside the norm and I like to experiment with that: a day without experiencing anything new is a day not lived.

#### **Nice motto, but you’ve been at Bouncespace for 9 years now, and are even called the place’s Plant Doctor. So much for new things everyday?**

You got me there. But it’s not your typical 9-to-5 corporate work situation. Things are very fluid and casual, there’s a lot of atypical people with an aligned mindset coming in and going out. Luckily, no day’s the same. And for the plants… I never had much interest in plants until the pandemic hit, and my wife and I received a plant starter kit as a gift. What really piqued my curiosity was the plant care app that came with it. It felt like having a digital pet, reminiscent of Tamagotchis. As the pandemic unfolded, my fascination with plants grew immensely. I started collecting plants at home, but space was limited, and my wife implemented a "one in, one out" policy. So, I took some of them to work instead. Now, about three-quarters of the plants at Bouncespace are mine, and I can't bear to neglect them. I've grown attached to this responsibility and I find the process of nurturing them quite meditative.

#### **Meditative?**

Yes, I never have structured days, because I'm usually juggling multiple things simultaneously. Yoga and meditation became essential to me to cope with that. It forces me to take a step back, breathe in and out, and find moments of peace in my mind which benefits me physically and mentally. I'm quite a stimulus seeker, always eager to learn something new every day, considering it as a challenge. This mindset also led me into the world of bondage. My wife often modeled for BDSM shows, where she was intricately tied with ropes in front of an audience. Curious about how difficult it could be, I took on the challenge to be tied myself. Surprisingly, I saw many parallels with yoga – the physical and mental challenges, pushing boundaries, and using breathing and meditation to surpass pain and discomfort.

#### **But bondage can be really painfull, right? Doesn't bondage sometimes cause immense pain?**

Pain varies for each person; what's more important to me is that we're dealing with blood circulation and nerves. Bondage can seriously harm someone. Understanding the human body, knowing where nerves, muscles, and blood vessels run is crucial. With this knowledge and experience, you can tie people in a safe manner. I'm slowly but steadily expanding my knot-skills, and now I can confidently say that I'm good at tying knots responsibly. I started out as a workshop model years ago, as one of the few men in this scene who weren’t driven by sexual arousal or achieving a different headspace; my interest lies in seeking challenges and engaging in unique experiences. That's why I don't consider ropes to be a fetish. For me, it's more about exploration and personal growth rather than being sexually driven by ropes or rope scenes.

#### **But you're not averse to a fetish party here and there, right?**

Haha, yes. I attended my first fetish party in 2001, purely out of curiosity. I was involved in the tattoo and piercing scene in Amsterdam, which is quite intertwined. Through them, I got on the guest list for Wasteland. I always had an interest in “the forbidden”, but I attended fetish parties because my friends were going and I mostly hung out backstage, just like at any regular party. The Netherlands isn't the most exciting country for fetish events anyways. Dutch party-goers are generally not genuinely interested in the actual fetish aspect. They're mostly swingers or couples who pop a pill and decide to go to such a party, looking for a one-time thrill of being with someone else. That has nothing to do with fetish, to be honest.

#### **What is a fetish, then?**

The definition is finding sexual arousal from a specific thing, whether it's a material or an object. Personally, I don't have a fetish, but the reason I often come across fetishes is probably because I'm nonjudgmental. I don't easily find things strange or unusual. I have friends with diverse hobbies, interests, or lifestyles that others might consider odd. I don't judge them, so perhaps I attract such people as well. In the Netherlands, we pretend to be open-minded, but when someone actually does something peculiar, the public perception displays closed-mindedness. The intriguing aspect of the fetish scene is that it delves into things considered more extreme, which further distances itself from what people perceive as normal or average. What excites me is the exploration of various scenes and subcultures, and understanding the motivations and interests of the people within them.

#### **Sounds very anthropological, for someone working in the computer business?**

True, it may seem like an unconventional combination, but I found a way for my genuine appreciation of understanding people to complement my academic background in Computer Science–I started my career by becoming an editor for a computer magazine. I loved the job, it allowed me to utilize my social skills, creativity and technical expertise and eventually I even became editor-in-chief. This role opened doors, connecting me with an extensive network within the industry. Currently, I work in public relations, at Technik PR, which still keeps me firmly anchored within the tech domain. My days revolve around staying at the forefront of technological innovations, crafting press releases, and disseminating product samples to media professionals. A significant portion of my work involves networking and nurturing valuable connections – something I genuinely love doing. My philosophy is simple, yet daring: be unapologetically honest, and never dish out any pretentious fluff. While it might make my job more challenging at times, this approach keeps me true to myself. In an industry often tainted by inauthenticity, I embrace my unapologetically unconventional approach – after all, it's the essence of who I am.
